Seriously, two grand for a Studio M1 Max and it won't perform the most basic of tasks- going to sleep when I tell it to. sometimes it takes 6-8 tries before it will go to sleep. Sometimes it will go to sleep on the first or 2nd try if I clear my recent items first, but that's no guarantee. so frustrating. with they'd address this in an update sooner than later.

M1 Max Mac Studio has no problems going to sleep. I know when it's sleeping because I have a watt meter attached and an old USB Griffin Power Mate that has a pulsing LED when it's sleeping.

My last restart was to update macOS.

It did have problems sleeping when I had an OWC Thunderbolt to 10GBase-T adaptor attached. I don't know why it kept waking when that was connected but, once I removed it, sleep worked perfectly.

I suggest trying sleep with the bare minimum of external devices attached and see how it works out.

I probably should have clarified- when I try to put it to sleep via the apple dropdown menu, I select "sleep", the screen goes black, and then two seconds later it comes back on to my desktop.

Most likely something is waking it up. Do you have some special peripherals attached or maybe it’s software or network access?

Try entering the following in Terminal and see if it gives you any hints as to why it's waking:

Code:
log show --style syslog | fgrep "Wake reason"

The most recent update has caused my air to start doing this too. Happened twice so far since updating

Is your Mac connected via HDMI to HDMI?

You might try this app to see what it shows you: https://ohanaware.com/sleepaid/

MacOSX, Linux, Windows. No matter the platform, I've had sleep issues. Its very inconsistent, I'll have one mac and it can sleep, but another won't. Most PCs and Linux machines were very consistent with their inability to sleep.

It's literally never been trustworthy. Not for me anyway.
Been using Macs 11 years now and that's the one thing that's consistently broken: even when it did work on my iMac, there were always issues reconnecting to various external peripherals such as audio interfaces, midi control surfaces and whatnot, that it required a reboot to get everything working again.
I changed the config so the only thing that sleeps is the display, after 5 mins of inactivity.

These days the machines boot so quickly you may as well just shut them down.
It's not like in the HDD days where you had to wait 50-60 seconds to get to a working desktop.

maybe I've just been lucky up until now? got my first Mac, a blue and white G3 back in 2000, then a G4 in 2002, and another in 2004. Than an iMac in 2007 and a MBP in 2014. they all went to sleep on command, sans-issues.

That's certainly an option but I'm of the mindset that it's better for the computer to put it to sleep than to shut down/power up every time I use it.

oh yeah. two ssd's. a (older) usb hub, and an audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 8i6). the audio interface is always off when I put the computer to sleep though. as far as the ssd's, I've tried ejecting them before putting the computer to sleep but it makes no difference.

I'm still of the Windows mindset that it's probably best to start at least each new day with a reboot to 'clear out the junk' and tbh it's a mindset that's served me well over the years, even though prior to SSD's it did involve a lot of daily waiting.

Are you using a wireless mouse? Right after selecting sleep it may detect the slight mouse movement when you let go of it. I would have to gently left click my Logitech mouse and carefully move my hand away to prevent the monitor from turning back on from sleep. Now I just use a keyboard hotkey that I assigned for sleep.

Put the DISPLAY to sleep. Or just "reach forward" and turn off the display.
Just let the computer sit there, "awake, but idling".

The difference between "sleep" and "awake but idling" is next-to-nothing in terms of power consumption these days.

I've never used the Sleep command under the Apple. I just close the lid/screen on my 14" MacBook Pro Max. Your post caused me to try the menu command. It worked the first time, but every time after that it awoke within a second! Nothing is connected to the computer except the power cable (and of course WiFi). I noticed that TimeMachine was running. Don't know if that makes any difference. Thanks for pointing out a bug I didn't know existed!:) I just keep closing the lid!

In my 10 years of using MacBook Pro, there's only been like once where it waked up by itself.
You should look at what random hardware/software you have in your setup that's causing the problem, cuz it definitely ain't Macs or Mac OS
