So the day finally came, sent my Mac Pro 5,1 out the door today. Got a decent price and it feels the right thing to do now.

Ordered a maxed-out iMac thursday (the new upgraded version), delivery will be between 16th and 18th of October.

As much as I love my MP 5,1 I have considered doing exactly the same thing as you did.

Yeah, and I got more for the Mac Pro than I had to pay for the iMac. Win-win situation :)

For the record, I've been using Power Mac's and later Mac Pro's since 2001.
 
I will be getting 6 years out of mine. Best longevity purchase ever. Still does not break a sweat.

ill have mine at least another 2 years. By then I figure the new mac pro will have gone through its paces and maybe 4k monitors will be where 30 in monitor pricing is now. Only way i am replacing my 30acds is with 32in 4k :cool:
 
After using a 2012 base-model iMac (27") at work for some weeks now, there were eventually no hesitations about the switch. When the late 2013 models came this week, I put the ad up on a local website and the Pro was sold after 1 hour (!).
 
Congrats on your new iMac. I'd still be keeping and using my Mac Pros as has helped me with years of good output.
 
iMac is cool...
but... I just replaced a hard drive in one.
not so much fun.
Consider the iMac a sealed system, like an iPad. (with the exception of memory)
Great box, but not for those who want to tweak inside.

I've been replacing my Mac Pro's every 3 years, so no difference there :) besides, I get nice things like Thunderbolt and Fusion Drive now.

Agreed. And I came to the conclusion that was not one of those :)
 
When I went to the Apple Store to buy my 5,1 and I was so close to getting an iMac, but I'm so happy I didn't. I wouldn't have been able to do with a iMac what I have with my Mac Pro. Also being able to put a six core in it, it will last many years to come
 
Well, (almost) did the same thing...

My good ol' 2008 Mac Pro (8 x 2.8, Radeon HD 7950, 16 GB RAM, SSD and HDD) will move aside for the new iMac 27": maxxed out.

Can't wait!! :)
 
Count me in among those who have upgraded from a Mac Pro (1,1) to an iMac.

I LOVED my Mac Pro. Absolutely adored it. But Apple took away BOTH features that made me buy the Mac Pro in the first place back in 2006!

- Internal SATA disk slots
- Ability to change/upgrade the video card

The new Mac Pro is basically an overpowered Mac Mini. I can do everything I would do with the new Mac Pro, with an iMac, and it uses up less space on my desk.

It's sad that Apple has taken this path, and basically KILLED the traditional upgradeable/expandable desktop computer tower. However the iMacs have reached the performance point now where they can do what I need to do, so it was time.

R.I.P. Mac Pro, 2006-2013.

The Mac Pro will do whatever that iMac does much much faster but that can be said for any computer produced in the last 5 years. They can all do the task but the speed in which that task is performed separates them. 24 threads vs. 8 is a big big deal. The iMac has the exact same limitations the new Mac Pro has with the added screen volatility. Needing suction cups to remove LCD panel to get at 3.5" HD is not really a 'bonus' of flexibility. I am not a fan of one or the other but an overpowered Mac mini is a stretch. Same can be said of the iMac: a moderately faster Mac Mini w/ screen and laptop GPU.
 
Well, count me in as another guy who replaced my Mac Pro with a 27" iMac (on the way).

As another user said, the iMac has caught up. Add price sensitivity into the mix, and I'm no longer willing to pay the price premium to get the perf benefit for the home office.
 
I for one am going taking the opposite route. Just purchased a second hand Mac Pro 4.1. If I do the math for me this route seems a lot cheaper. If I max out a iMac 27" on the Dutch Apple Store for a 3,5Ghz 4 core i7, 16gb ram, 1tb fusion drive and GTX780M I come up to € 2296,- ex VAT. For a Geekbench score of 10-14k?

For the Mac Pro route I start off with € 1075,- for my second hand 2x2.26 Ghz 4.1 Mac Pro, 16gb ram and 256gb HD. Add € 120,- for a Samsung 840 EVO 256gb SSD, € 20,- for a OWC SSD mount, € 275,- for a GTX 680 flashed to Mac Edition. Total of € 1490,- ex VAT for a machine with Geekbench of 11-12k. On top of that I just spent € 400,- on a pair of used X5650's on eBay. Add that all up and I come to a total of € 1890,- ex VAT for a Geekbench of 20k+ and future expandability. Also when in 2-3 years the prices of the X5690's drop I can do another upgrade and get even higher Geekbench. In all fairness if you were also to purchase a 27" monitor the iMac is alot cheaper.

But then again, we all have our own priorities. Perhaps some people really need Thunderbolt or like the all-in-one solution of a iMac...I for one am really choked with my Mac Pro and can't wait for my X5650's to arrive :)

Count me in for a 4K display IF AND ONLY IF they make it in an anti-glare screen otherwise they can pry the 30" ACD out of my cold, dead hands ;)
 
My Mac Pro 4,1 (which I have converted into a 5,1 and upgraded to a 3.33 GHz Hex) is still going strong. Somehow I don't think I would be saying the same about a 2009 iMac..
 
I think we are lucky to have so many great choices.
I love my 12 core MP.
It is working really well for me.

I'm just about to buy a new iMac for the front end of our business.

When the new MP comes out, I will consider buying it.
These are all great machines.

Pick the ones that work for you and enjoy.
