Ok, just had a funny comment on Apple store employees. I took a little trip to the cambridgeside Apple store in Boston as I needed to pick something up, but while I am there I can never resist checking out the MBP section. Still saving up and all, but they are beautiful to look at. Of course, when you stop in front of a computer for more than 30 seconds, you suddenly have an emo friend with thick black glasses, pre-pubescent facial hair, and an Apple store employee T-shirt. I really don't mean that in a negative way, as we all fit our own molds, but they're becoming more stereotypical than the misunderstood musicians at my 1,000 local starbucks. Ah, I digress. Back to the story...
So, I tell him that I'm just looking, but he really wants to be helpful and seems like a nice enough guy, so I decide to make some small talk. And though I knew he would have no actual information, I thought he might like to chat or speculate, so I asked when he thought they would put an LED screen in the 17" MBP...
"Uhhhh...." he says. "ummm.... I.. wha?"
He goes on...
"err, I don... they make those?"
Yes, I explain. They do make those. Apple has them in the 15" MBP, they offer benefits such as being brighter, better on battery life, more accurate colors, and so on.
"In the 15"? Um, uhhhh... really? Wha?"
By now you think I'm being mean. You think that I'm overexaggerating his response. I AM NOT. The reason I thought this was so funny was not because he didn't know anything about LED screens, it was because he really had all of those long pauses in his response. Everything he said ended in an upward inflection. His head tilted to the side like a dog does when it's figuring something out. His eyes went blank. He kept saying "wha...". He was slowly backing away. It was nuts. I finally ended it by telling him I didn't have any questions and he bolted.
I'm not saying that I'm a genius (pardon the pun), nor do I know an incredible amount about hardware. And I don't expect a floor employee at apple or sony or any chain store to know as much as the people here (macrumors), and that's why I bring most of my real questions to this forum. It's just that this guy didn't do his homework at all. Why do I need help from someone who is just going to read me what is on the sign next to the machine?? Yes, I already know the benefits of OS X! That seems to be the only thing they know to tell me. The last guy I had a real question for tried to google the answer on a nearby iMac (without success), which is what I had done before I even went to the store! This is just at the surface of my negative experiences with apple store employees. Is this just a Boston store problem?
What the poop?
