I'm finally 100% finished with my HackinMac G5 project. I had a broken Power Mac G5 lying around so I decided to embark on the modding journey to see what I could make. I am quite pleased with the way the system runs, and how the internals turned out.

The process was fairly straight forward:
  • Gut the entire system
  • Cut the back to make room for the motherboard tray (using a dremel)
  • Install the motherboard tray and bolt into place
  • Cut the top shelf to make room for the motherboard but leave a spot for the DVD drive
  • Wire the original front-panel connector to support the power LED, power button, and USB port (big pain in the butt)
  • Create a power-supply power cable bridge so I could put the PSU in the front of the case
  • Make it as clean as I cared to make it on the inside
  • Get the hard drive cage mounted
  • Install OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2

The specs on the system are not fantastic as I already had a high-performance desktop and just wanted a working G5 mod:

And now for some pics:

Very nice!

This got me thinking...

According to the EULA, you can only install OS X on Apple branded hardware. Since your installing OS X into an Apple computer case, does that make this a legal hackintosh? And if not, where do you draw the line? After all, the inside of my iMac isn't - component wise - any different than the inside of my PC.

As far as I'm concerned this is Apple branded hardware. Side by side with a normal G5 you can't tell them apart. I have 2 working G5's and this hacked one, and they all look identical unless you look from the back.

Steve Jobs would disagree though, I'm sure.
