Core i5... Have you seen the size of the Mac Mini lately?

Yeah. I'm not saying it's feasible right now, but it would be nice if a Mac Mini could replace my hulking HP core i7 desktop one day. I'm not interested in iMac or "all-in-one" machines.

but would you be willing to $1200-$1600? because what you're really asking for is a headles imac (or a mini tower).

you can pick any 2, but you can't have all 3 without some compromises:
A) compact form factor
B) affordable price
C) high performance

I'd gladly pay $1200 for a headless iMac. 2x the size of the mini would be just fine considered I have a tower PC right now and anything would be smaller. :D

like i said, pick 2. if you want B + C, then you can't have A. and the mac mini is all about A (compact form factor), so from apple's pov, it's a no go.

I didn't say I need the super compact form factor. Apple could easily double the size while keeping a beautiful looking box. Do you doubt that?

it's not a question of whether apple can do something. they can do anything. but as of now their imac line fits the middle consumer market. and they're taking the stance that an all-in-one at that price point is better, in terms of profitability (for apple) and market demands (consumer needs).

The discussion of headless iMac has been beaten to death. Current desktops sell well enough so there is no need for such product. Apple also wants to dominate the market and that's what they do with iMac, they include KB, mouse and display, meaning that a user doesn't have to buy anything as there would be a possibility that he bought for example display from other company.
