My mac mini just stopped working one day , it'll boot then it'll show "loading mac osx" then it'll hang on a blue screen with the mouse. I tried using the leopard install disc and it spits it back out... I don't know what to do.

My sound port doesn't work so I can hear the chime to start into safe-mode. It's frustrating me. Please help!

Firstly, the MacMini has a builtin speaker, if you've managed to mute the sound, it is possible to restore it's default (make sure there's nothing in the audio out port). You can reesetting the PRAM, on powerup, via pressing and hold the following keys.

Command+Option+P+R
and wait for the second screen refresh.

After, try using the hardware diagnostic cd/dvd and do a in-depth hardware check. It's usually contained on the Leopard DVD, but instead of pressing "C", press "D".

they are gonna charge me a million dollars to fix it.

Apple won't charge you a million bucks to fix it provided it's within it's first 12 months, as they have 1 year warranty. However, if you've been inside the machine, for an memory upgrade or what ever, then yes. Apple will charge a fairly hefty price to fix it; as the Mini isn't user-serviceable.

Also, there's a trouble shooting page for the new MacMini
(since you don't say which year yours is)

Actually opening a Mac mini and doing an upgrade doesn't void the warranty, but if it's been damaged because of it being opened and upgraded then that damage won't be covered under warranty.

The OP providing additional information would also be helpful in providing help.

I think, at the end of the day, Apple doesn't need to honour the warranty if Apple can tell/prove the MacMini been opened by a non Apple service centre. In the new 2009 MacMini's there nothing inside that's serviceable other than upgrading the RAM, CPU is now surface mounted.

Without knowing which model and how old your mini is....it's tough to offer much help

Rubbish. There's no "Warranty Void if Opened" stickers or label, so there's nothing to stop you opening it.

Of course there is nothing stopping you. Even so, the fact remains that you aren't technically suppose to service it yourself. However, the only way they will know is if you mess up while it is open.

True, but on page 39 of the Mac Mini manual, it states:

WARNING: Do not attempt to open your Mac mini. ...Your Mac mini doesn't have any user-serviceable parts.

Seems to me they're covered should they choose not to honor the warranty.

Well, if they really want to void the warranty by opening it they should state: "warranty is voided if opened." A warning doesn't allow them to void the warranty......unless you damaged it opening it....that's a different story.

That's like the "swim at own risk" signs at swimming pools, that DOES NOT release the pool owner from responsibility.

This review Macworld: Mac mini (Late 2009), states:

"Apple confirmed that you can still upgrade your mini without voiding the warranty. However, as in the past, upgraded components—third-party RAM and hard drives—are not covered by the mini’s warranty, and if you break anything in the process of upgrading, such damage is not covered."

My understanding of that statement is that Mac minis can be user upgraded.
