My Mac Pro has gone crazy since getting a Time Capsule

I have (I think) a second generation Mac Pro. It's a 2.66 Quad Xenon with 5GB Ram and a Radeon X1900.

I just got a Time Capsule, set it up, and backups seem to be going well. The weird thing is, randomly my Video card fan will ramp up to full speed, while the computer is asleep, and will stay there until I click the mouse and wake up the computer.

Does this have something to do with Time Machine? Has anyone else experienced this?

For purposes of diagnosis I suggest you temporarily turn off Time Machine. Does the behavior persist? Then probably not time machine related.

It isn't Time Machine

Unless you go to the Apple Menu and select sleep, the computer isn't actually sleeping. All it does is turn off the display, even though everything is still running in the background. This means that the screen saver is still running even though the computer is "sleeping." The screen saver uses a decent amount of processor and graphics processing power. This is probably what is causing the increase in fan speed.

To test this, I would sleep the computer from the apple menu and see if you still experience this problem. If it doesn't, you can either sleep the computer from the Apple Menu every time, disable the screen saver before the computer goes to auto-sleep, or fiddle with the energy saver settings.

Do a PRAM zap to see if it helps the situation.
Hold down cmmd-opt-p-r for 3 boot chimes and release.
Test.

trying turning of the time capsule backup although i think the screensaver idea of Rockeneer is probably the problem your having.

Thanks for the ideas! I already did a PRAM reset, and it still happens when I select Sleep from the apple menu. :-/

I just remembered that I also recently bought a powered USB hub, and when I plugged that in, my computer wouldn't boot up. Just the Fan on my video card would run really fast. As soon as I unplugged it, it booted up fine again. I hope I didn't destroy something somehow...
