Recently, my macbook has started spitting out DVDs that I try to feed it. It started with one or two, and if i kept putting them in, after 5/6 times it would just recognise them as normal and play them, but now its doing it with pretty much every DVD i own, then choosing randomly to play them when it wants.

Is this a problem with my drive? I got my macbook in Jan this year, so its not that old!

Anyone have any ideas??!

thanks,

Lucy

Macbook in Jan means that it is still covered by complimentary care. Send it in to apple...what else can you do really?

yeh its just that takes ages and is fairly inconvenient, thought id ask to see if i could fix it myself! hehe

There seems to be a ton of posts lately about failing Superdrives. Mine failed and was replaced under warranty about 3 weeks ago. Seems a little strange.

ah rubbish. guess that's my only option then!

I would NOT fix that myself...even though I am a qualified repair technician for SONY. You can't really do anything about a faulty drive besides replace the drive as a whole, and even then, opening up the macbook would void your warranty...so why would you go through all that?

PLUS, it does not take ages to repair for a qualified technician. Called apple monday, recieved box to ship back tuesday, apple recieved and repaired product wednesday, ship back wednesday, I receive on thursday. I mean they send you the box, and you can even have DHL come by your house to pick up the package. Where is the inconvenience/ how does it outweigh flushing your warranty down the toilet?

Now of course repair time depends on part availability and such...but you have to weigh consequences.

i didnt ever suggest taking it apart myself, just wondered if there was anythin software based i could do, but if u think its most likely a drive thing then il just get it fast tracked through work to be fixed by apple. Lucky i can, because I took it in to the shop and they said I'd have to wait 3 weeks!

thanks for your advice

Had a similar problem about 4 months into a macbook, apple care replaced the superdrive and it had been great since. Best of luck
