My MacBook passed away today...

Last week, it was experiencing the dreaded random shutdown disease. Thinking it may be a memory issue, I swapped the 3rd party RAM back to the original sticks, but that didnt cure it. It was fine for about a week, so I thought I would put the 3rd party RAM back in, and everything would be alright.

When I did, it didnt want to start up. The optic drive was constantly stopping and starting. After a few attemps at starting in several circumstances (battery out power in, power out battery in, PMU reset, then repeat) it finally made the normal noise, but no Sosumi (the startup bong noise) and nothing on the screen. The light next to the IR receiver turns on, and stays on. It seems my beloved is in a coma!

Its going back to the AppleCentre, maybe for a heart transplant (logic board replacement).

Point of this thread; if you are having the random shutdown problems, back your HDD up, and take it back. Better to return a sick MacBook than a departed one.

No need to personify it and add internal organs and gibbs to it where there is none. Unlike human beings and domestic animals, where each specimen has unique attributes and are *truly* unique, Macs are built by the thousands in assembly lines where their operators are barely paid 10 cents for the work that goes into each machine. "Unique" personality traits that can be ascribed to each machine are not personality traits, but more like bugs, defects that are to be scrubbed and ironed out.

I used to but working really eats up all your time. Hehe. Bender. But man.. been hearing so many of these stories with the MacBooks. Wonder whether its a chip problem or whether its just an assembly problem...

Might hide behind that wall of a G5 you got too .

On topic - we'll never here the percentage of faulty computers unfortunately. But as long as it's still less than 20% it's "acceptable" supposedly.

@ generik, i know my MacBook is another MacBook, just like thousands or millions of others. I just thought I might put a different spin of the event of my MacBook's failure to operate.

Anyways.. back on to my own original topic...

i took it to an AppleCentre, it turns out it wasnt starting properly because i hadn't seated the RAM in properly. But they said i could leave it there to do hardware tests on to see if it was a logic board failure. I'll get a call tomorrow, im hoping (but not betting) that it will be fine. I know the guy there, so maybe if im lucky, ill get myself an extra 170MHz per core...

I don't watch futurama (pass the rock I'll do it myself to save you a trip) but I do have a flawless powerbook. I'm waiting 'til next year...
