My MacBook Pro just came with the old magsafe adapter

I got the same 2 weeks ago...
My 2.4 SR MBP came w/ Old School PSU as well... would have liked the New Style but my comp came in 2 days (in Canada) and works perfectly otherwise... Oh well; have to shell out the extra $100. bucks for that and then more for Leopard, but at least I've got some good time/ work in on my computer!!

Why a new thread? Don't worry about it. It does what it is intended to do, just like the new one, it provides the appropriate power to operate the MacBook Pro & charge the battery. Move on to using the computer for what's intended purpose is.
go to the apple store and tell them that you called applecare and applecare said they could swap it for the new one for you because you just got the computer.
they did it with not too much fuss. basically they ordered a power adapter and they hoped it was the smaller one they received. they got the smaller one and called me and I went down there to switch it over.
if you can't get it swapped, don't fret. it's just a power adapter, and the size difference isn't that phenomenal anyway.

yeah try and get a case number if possible.
I called applecare and they told me it shouldn't be a problem, but I forgot to ask for a case number.
Whether you call apple care or not - I'm sure other people have asked for the smaller power adapter. Either go to the apple store nearest to you (if you have one) or just call apple and see what they say.
I opened up my MBP last week, took out the adapter and my wife and I said at the same time "Daaamn, this thing is huge.." I didn't even realize they had released a newer, more compact version. Mine is a refurb 2.16 though, probably wasn't intended to have the new one included since I don't think they were out back when the 2.16s were new. Oh well...
I cant even tell the difference whether I have the new one or the old one!!!
It charges my MBP so thats all I'm concerned about!!!

I went through a whole rigmarole I do not recommend (bouncing from Apple Store to customer suppore to AppleCare back to the Apple Store etc.) in order to get the new adapter sent to me at half price. It was a pretty good deal.

I want to the apple store and as predicted, one guy didn't know anything about the redesigned ones. They did not have any of them, anyway, as in, they haven't received any.
Second guy who had more experience said that it's whatever comes with it. In other words, he just did the lazy thing.
Reason #350 that I would only buy from a place that has a no questions asked return policy (Fry's is the only place left). Fry's doesn't sell the new adapters, either. So I will return my macbook pro if needed. Only chance is to call tech support.
I think that it is wrong to deny you the new adapter....b/c on the apple website it says that the magsafe adapter has been redesigned. Why should it be luck of the draw? I am buying a macbook pro a good one month after this redesign was reported on engadget. To me, that's like buying a 2007 BMW that's advertised as coming with an improved stereo and getting a BMW that hadn't been fitted with it yet.
you can't return the macbook pro - not without a restocking fee!
When I called them initially the genius who answered (I was indeed connected to a genius) had no idea what the heck I was talking about).
You need to move on, get a life. It is a power adapter that provides power to your computer and allows the battery to be recharged. There is no value in having the new over the old. Your analogy is not even relevant.
Sure there is value--it's smaller. That's value to me and apparently to quite a few people. Go buy a 5.5 G ipod and get a 5 G ipod and tell me that you wouldn't go return it? Only difference is the screen, it's a little bit brighter. No value in that?
Yeah, and Fry's takes your MacBook back no questions asked, seals up the box and puts it back on the shelf. I once watched a Fry's employee take the DOA speakers I returned and jam it back in the box. When she couldn't fit everything back in, she just tossed one of the cables to the side, closed the box, and sealed the box in shrink wrap. Back on the shelf for the next sucker, I guess. Since then, I'm very careful about what I buy at Fry's.
They then put a "Reduced Price" sticker on the returns after they shrink wrap them (hopefully always).
Over an inch more of power adapter? I think you're putting way too much value on the smaller power adapter. Here is how you can tell:
1) Was your purchase contingent on getting a small power adapter? I.e., you waited to buy the MBP until the adapter shrunk.
2) Will having a 15% bigger power adapter prevent you from doing what you wanted to do with your MBP?
3) If the smaller adapter is really that big of a deal, if you bought the new adapter from apple.com and sold your 'almost new' adapter on ebay, your net loss would probably be around $20-$30. Is that worth returning a whole computer?
Well, I guess if and when my old PSU dies, I'll get the smaller one. OR, I could get a new one and use that one when I travel and leave the old one for home office use.

Apple Japan - 'NO!, Goodbye.'
The Apple store in Japan wouldn't help at all. They took 3 days of chasing before someone finally returned my call - and just said 'No'. No to a discount, no to a swap - no to any kind of help.
I am not surprised - customer service in Japan is BRUTAL!
I was going to buy a few adapters anyway - so I don't care that much - company will pay for them to keep in the few locations I frequent, but I do find their attitude frustrating.
