My Matte MBP should have been Glossy

Well after waiting six weeks for my Glossy 2.4/160gb 5400 rpm MBP to arrive (I ordered on 6/5/07) I came home yesterday and eagerly opened my new computer and began the process of customizing it. A few hours in though I realized that the reseller had goofed -- they sent me a matte display instead of glossy! Here it had been six weeks that I was waiting for their stock of glossy to arrive, and then they ship me a matte system. I didn't notice it at first as I am used to looking at a regular LCD screen that was hooked up to my old G4/933.

Now I will say that the matte screen is very nice and I don't have the problems others have had (I have a Samsung screen that may have been slightly yellow but a new profile appeared to fix it). So I'm asking for opinions: should I stick with the matte screen or return it for that which I originally ordered? I don't want to deal with more hassles than the last six weeks have already given me, and I also filled out all my rebate forms last evening once I got the serial number that was needed. I do video work in addition to "regular" activities (surfing, e-mail, music, etc). What do you all think?

Well, I strongly prefer matte screens anyway, so I never would have ordered glossy in the first place---but for the money, you should get what you want(ed). If you've seen the glossy and think you would prefer it, I say return this one and get the glossy. Surely it won't take them six more weeks to ship you a replacement.

Seems like a simple enough decision, really. You just have to choose whatever is most likely to keep you satisfied with your purchase in the long run.

personally I think the glossy screens give you a much more satisfying picture, provided you are in an environment where the reflection is not a problem. blacker blacks, whiter whites, etc. if your screen is tilted back really far so it reflects the overhead lights, or if you're wearing a white tshirt that is illuminated by the surroundings, then it becomes a problem.

basically, both screens will reflect the same light, but the matte with dither it so your brain can tune it out. with the gloss, you see the sharp edges of the reflections and your brain cant ignore it.

think about where you'll use it most, and you'll have your answer.

I have a 2.2 glossy right now and i love it. I upgraded from a matte 1.83 so i've had both screens. Overall glossy is much better for watching movies, looking at pics and whatnot. The glare isn't as bad as people say it is either, the screen is bright enough to not make you notice the glare. If you have the time i would switch it but either way i would complain and try to get $100 off or something. Whatever you choose you'll either would've a) waited 6 weeks for the wrong product or b) waited (i'm guessing 3 weeks for the new one) 9 weeks for the right product.

Let's not turn this thread into another silly glossy vs. matte debate. wjcjhwk wants product satisfaction recommendations, not a pitch for matte or glossy or a dissection of either model's finer points.

However (tee-hee), I can echo wjcjhwk's sentiments on the surprising clarity of the MBP matte. Those things run circles around most other consumer "matte" notebooks. Pretend glossy and matte are COMPLETELY identical in every way, save one aspect - the finish. When all's said and done, that's really the only difference anyway. The vast majority of hardware components that make up the two screens are the same. The divergence occurs several steps into the display layering process. Either you have a hardcoat "anti-glare" (matte) layer or a hardcoat glossy layer added to the sandwich.

As far as the retailer's mistake - Call them up and explain how you waited six weeks only to realize you were sent the INCORRECT model. Say something like this: "I understand there was a backorder situation. I was more than happy to patiently wait for this machine to arrive. Unfortunately, the model you shipped is not the model I specified, and this is reflected on my invoice. I'd certainly appreciate exchanging this MacBook Pro for the glossy model I selected. Could I expect a significantly reduced wait-time?"

Everyone here is right - if you've waited this long and paid this much, you shouldn't settle for something that isn't what you want.

Here's your solution: trade for my glossy MB! 2ghz c2d, barely used the mouse or what not, been using it closed.... already put on a full skin, and it's got a glossy screen! I'll even pay for your shipping costs!

$2500 does not a MacBook make. Though I'm sure you were joking. OP, return it if you wish, you'll be pleased with the glossy... it's your money, spend it how you want.

If nothing else is wrong with the computer then I would just keep it. Like you said, it would probably be a hassle to return and you would have to wait for a new one.
If it really is nagging you though, then you could call the reseller and see what they are willing to do for you (like rush a new one to you).
Just throwing out ideas, but it may be that they never recieved their shipment of glossy's so instead of telling you "sorry we don't have that one" they sent you a matte instead, hoping you wouldn't notice

Get the glossy screen. Thats what you wanted. You paid your money you should at least be able to get what you really want. And if you favored a glossy screen, it will probably feel far superior to you. Thats something I would wait again for.

I had a glossy that was defective and swapped it for a matte because that's all my local Apple Store had in-stock at the time. I'm perfectly happy with the result.
