After a few days, I have gotten a clear impression of my 2.0 GHz white MacBook with 60 GB HDD and 1 GB RAM. So, here it is:

Glossy screen cover:
Many people have benn worried about the glossy screens, and so was I, but when I first started the MacBook, I saw no reflection. When the screen is completely turned off, you can see slight reflecyion, yet I have not experienced any reflection while the computer was turned on, neither in sunlight or any other conditions.

Battery:
My old PC laptop (Amilo Pro V1000, 2.4 GHz Celeron D, 256 MB DDR RAM, 30 GB HDD and Intel GMA/852 16 MB), had around 2 hours pf battery while surfing the web (wireless). My new MB presented 4 hours and 57 minutes of this (screen dimmed to 3 sticks). So roughly 5 hours of battery. Working Word with screen dimmed to one stick, I got 7 hours and 13 minutes! It is really an impressive battery, and I won't need an extra one in any case.

Keyboard and trackpad:
WOW! Man, that's a pimpin' keyboard! After three hours, I had gotten used to the new keyboard, It is very easy to type on, and somehow your fingers feel more relaxed. I know the scrolling trackpad is old news, but I was very impressed by how handy the scrolling function was. Also with this new gigantic trackpad, it makes it a lot easier.

Speakers:
I have finally discovered where the speakers are located.
img00014gn.jpg

Those griles on the back are the speakers. Though many may find it unpractical that they're sitting here, it works surprisingly well, also when you have it in your lap. The bass has also improved from the iBook speakers, and I have completely dropped my extenal speakers. I still use my wireless uber Sennheiser (see sig) though.:D

Screen:
The brightness is frickin' insane. I haven't yet taken a comparison picture with the iBook, but I will soon. The iBooks screen has top brightness, where the MacBook has around 60% brightness. This is insane! The resolution is bery impressive, likewise the contrast, and watching the Halo 3 trailer in 1280x720 High Definition is a uber experience!

Magnets (latch and powerplug):
The MagSafe works very well, and since it is old news, I will go straight on to the latch. It is very practical, and it looks very cool too. Because I baby my MB, I open and close it very slowly and carefully, but besides saving time, it is in general a good feature.

Speed:
Tie your seatbelt: I booted this MacBook in 21.2 SECONDS! It is wickedly fast. It too 7 seconds for my old PC to start iTunes, now it opens instantly. It is in general snappier at everyday stuff, and especially in waking up from sleep. It took my old PC 13 seconds to do so, and the MacBook does it in less than one second.

Issues:
None.

No, seriously, it is completely free of issues. It mooed once for 1.5 seconds, that's it. No whine, no falling apart, no moo, it is perfect. It doesn't get hot either. The max I've had was 33 degrees celcius, and that was running iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, Keynote, Word and MSN.

AirPort Extreme:
Though Apple claims, that the MacBook should have better AP reception that former Macs, I have not experienced so. It is excactly the same as my brothers iBook (1.07 GHz G4, 256 MB DDR RAM, 14.1", ComboDrive, AirPort Extreme abd 40 GB HDD). It is good, but not impressive.:)

iSight:
The iSight is just uber! The quality is good, clear colors, everything. There is one downside though. I kow this is common for all webcams, but it works very poorly in dark. Here I have a trick though. Turn screen to max brightness, and it will work as a SightLight.;)

SuperDrive:
Many people have reported that the drives in MacBooks are very sensitive to scratched discs, yet when I inserted my "Busted Stuff" CD, it read it without any problems, whilst my old Xbox (not 360), couldn't. Though the drive is noisy when ejecting discs, this is not a problem, it is more silent than any tray-loading drive I've seen or heard. Though it is inferior to the drive of the 14" iBooks and 12" PB's drive in burning speed, I don't vare much for that, since I rarely burn DVD's.

Weight/size:
I can't feel a difference when carrying the 14" iBook or the MacBook. Though the MacBook is pleasently thin, they weigh around the same. The MacBook is more compact, and you can hold it between two fingers, without taking the risk of dropping it. I'd say it is the ultimate protable soloution.

Just my 40% of a nickel, and I hope it wasn't too boring.

Just got mine today, so still early days. But so far I have to agree with everything the OP has said.

Just one thing... how the heck do I make the fonts in Safari bigger?? I can hardly read anything anymore

Was wondering if you're still getting roughly the same life from your battery? Surfing the web with the screen on 3 bars only gets me a little over 3 hours of battery (on a 2 week old MB).

check if bluetooth is on.

nice summery, i really am likeing this keyboard.

also the fan when on full blast is much quieter than my ibooks fan, though it comes on much much easier.

the wieght i dont find to be an issue, my rule of tumb is if you cant hold your laptop at arms length horizontally for 60 seconds you have a problem and i can hold mine for about 2 mins before i give out.

What are you using to take this reading? Also, how long was the computer running before you checked the temperature? I have NEVER seen anything lower than 50C on this, and that's a RARE occasion... Usually in the sixties.

Just thought I would add my comments to this thread. I have had an iMac for about 4 months now and cannot go back to windows!. So when i decided i also need a laptop of course Apple was the only option.

Well Saturday I was visiting family in London so went to the apple store and picked up a black MacBook. Got it back and turned it on only to find some dead pixels which was not good. Phoned them up and they said no probs just swap it over. Next day i go back to apple (which i didnt mind as i LOVE that store!) and checked out the white ones. My black one was only used for a few minutes and it had nasty prints on the case and especially the trackpad.

So when I went back i swapped for a 2ghz White MacBook and also bought some Monster iClear (got £115 refund too).

This MacBook is PERFECT!. No moo, no pixel problems and runs like a dream. Also does not show off prints which is a major thing for me as i like my stuff liiking perfect for as long as possible.

Now for some useage information. Well i charged my white macbook overnight and had a 4 1/2 hour train ride back from London to Torquay and lucky for me I had a table seat. 20mins or so into the journy and out comes my MacBook. First thing was to turn off Bluetooth and turn off WiFi plus adjust the baclkight to a suitible level. This machine lasted me 4hrs on the train home and STILL had 1hr and change left when i got back!.

Of course I was not content with just having a MacBook.... oh no I had to order 2GB of RAM to go with it.

Well that turned up this morning and took 7 hours to install!... NO NO NO its not that hard its my equipment. You need a Phillips 00 Screwdriver to take off the back screws to install memory and this i did not have. Infact i only had a large flat head screwdriver and i had to slide at an angle and keep trying to loosen the screws. 7hrs later i went to the shop for a drink and I saw a pack of screwdrivers (pocket size) in which there was a flat head 1.0mm screwdriver which worked PERFECT!.

Booted up my MacBook and checked the info and there it was... 2Ghz Core Duo and 2GB DIMM RAM under that. Used 1 of the 256 from my MacBook in my iMac making that 1.25GB so that was a nice extra.

I will run some spead tests but so far from normal use this think flys!. iTunes takes 4 seconds to load on my iMac and it took just about 1-2 on the MacBook. iPhoto with 1000+ photos taken on full size with a 8 megapixel camera took only 2-3 seconds to open and browse pictures!.

Boot up time is only 14 seconds and that initial 'Starting OSX' or whatever it is shows for about 1/2 a second before being able to use the mac.

Will post pics and vids too once I had a break.

If anyone wants any speed isues or questions answered just ask and I will see if I can help

I have a white macbook with the same specs as the OP, and I agree with everything he said. A very good review with good explanations. The macbook is really an incredible computer, and early worries about the screen and keyboard were totally unfounded; both are pretty amazing.

It's nice to see positive feedback. Sometimes this board feels like one non-stop whine-fest, but I bet the majority of owners are just as happy with their macbook as the OP and I both am.

iStat Pro.

And BTW aristobrat, I still get same amount of battery. I seem to have been extremely lucky with my MB, but check perihipals, BT, DVD's etc...

You didn't answer the rest of my questions. What's that about? How long was the machine on for when you took these readings?

I can't seem to get any temperature readings out of this iStat Pro... I don't believe that you actually get 33 degree readings out of your Macbook. I've never seen any temperature readings that low out of a modern notebook, and I highly doubt that ASUS made a perfectly designed cooling solution just for your MacBook.

33 Celsius is what hot days are here, that's cooler than your body temperature! ;)

No harm done, but check it out, I'd really like to see what it is.

How much RAM do you suggest I put in my MB?

I do word processing, use the iLife suite extensively, iWork, web browsing (mostly MR:D ) and the occasional handbraking of DVD's:D

No more than 1 GB. It won't pay off with 1.25 GB, since the dual channel ability wit 2x512 is faster, though it's only 1 GB. If you wanna upgrade later, you might wanna get a 3rd party 1 GB stick. There is no way you're gonna need 1.5 or 2 GB RAM. Just go for 1 gig Apple RAM. It's only 100 bucks, and the guys at stores will be much nicer to you if your MB f*cks up.:D

BTW, here a proof of 32 degrees celcius, told ya it had been 33 degrees::D

Thanks for the rad review. I agree with everything you said. I have had a black one for about a week and a bit now and it's been fantastic.

I'm used to my powerbook's airport range, so the macbook has been really impressive for me in that regard.

I'm glad y'all enjoyed my review. I like my MB too, and in addition, it is really easy to keep clean, especially the keyboard, with the new space between the keys.;)
