My MBA is in it's box, pending return, and I hate it!

Stupid stupid stupid MBA who is getting over-heated on me.. Damnit! It's THE most wonderful machine I've ever used and I miss it already. This is truly making me sad. What a crap day.

Im not going to even think about getting another MBA until I know for sure that the heating problems are resolved. If there's a MBP with the MBA/MB keyboard and _exact_ same multitouch (maybe it is?) released before a revision of the MBA then I will definitely be getting one. It's my first Mac, only had it for 12 days, and I don't want to go back to my Dell with Windows XP on it, what a nightmare in comparison.

Hoepfully not too many people will suffer the same problem, but I can see there's quite a few already.

No heating issues here one month old Monday and running cool and quiet :) to me if you love it that much get it replaced........and i dont think that many are getting hot:(

The current MBP revision has multitouch + the MB keyboard. Go ahead and buy one.

EDIT
True, no MB keyboard. What I saw was a mockup of someone saying that the MBP had the MB in the last revision.

Three weeks with my MBA and living in a hot and humid country (Phils) - no problems with overheating. Experienced one core shutting down ONCE - when I first ran Time Machine for its first backup.

Get a new one...mine runs quiet, cool and zippy no matter what I throw at it. You just got a lemon...it happens man.

No problems with overheating here, either. Mine's been running all day with a Windows VM in the background and it's currently running @ 52 degrees with a fan speed of 2510 (according to iStat)
Sounds like you got a bad one :(

I'm in the same boat

I have exactly the same problems ans teek. I though have a Genius appt tomorrow at 4pm. I will give the MBA another try (assuming of course they let me, mine is 16 days old and just really started having problems yesterday). I could not even use itunes today to play songs and surf without having the song cut out every 30 seconds. My iphone with no fan at all is more capable than my current MBA. I can play video and audio and never craps out on me.

I am on my THIRD MBA and this one is worse than the others. My girlfriend £399 sony vaio can easily handle all the things that are making my £1200 MBA slow down.

Its simple , the MBA has design problems, the heat under my air gets so hot that if i kept my handon it for more than 30 seconds it would leave a burn mark on my hand.

I dont think it a design flaw as mine rests in my lap all day and i have yet
,had to move it because of heat.... so dont believe it;)

I have both a MBA and an MBP

The MBA is a touchy bugger. It is really a niche item and is great but the fans go full blast just by looking at it (mine is normal-trust me).
A great device for those always running around as it's so light and svelte

The MBP is fantastic and you should get that (15" as it's rather light at 5lbs).

I absolutely GUARANTEE you will be very happy , especially with the new models.

I will probably sell both my present machines in June, as I suspect they will have a newer MBP model with blue-ray etc.

But the present model MBP is more than fine.

It's a toss up between the MBP and the MBA (to be honest). The MBP faster and less finicky, and it's not that much heavier.
I also HATE external DVD drives (with a passion). I do NOT see the point.

Sure....I know.....not as sexy

give me a break.

edit: To be clear: My MBA doesn't get hot and plays Youtube, DVD's fine. The fan jacks in right away and keeps it cool,
Actually, cooler than the MBP.

But if I were to turn the fans on the MBP all they way up like the MBA does it would be very cool also (and loud)

I hope I didn't sound negative about the MBA (not that anyone gives a ratz butt) as I'm not at all.

It's just, the MBP is so nice also, right?

You can't go wrong either way and if someone is having weird issues with the Air and a replacement it might be better to grab a MBP rather than agonize.

iStat Pro shows normal temperatures, but I'm sure it isn't right. It's a pain touching the machine when the fan goes on full speed and extreme performance degradation occurs. Can it be that somehow iStat is getting bad data? I mean, the temperatures reported are definitely wrong and the fan goes full speed for no reason, at least according to the temperature readings from iStat Pro.

It sounds like you could have a defective sensor which would definitely cause problems.(makes sense eh?)

There's some tests.

Some others will have more info as I'm uninformed about this.

MBA runs fine in Veoh even

Just for comparison, my old Powerbook skips around when playing Veoh TV shows (i.e. Firefly), even when I'm not running other apps because the CPU tops out. My friend's MBA runs them fine even with other apps running, and each CPU runs at just around 50%. It doesn't get hot at all btw.
