Ok twice tonight my macbook pro out of no where instantly powered off, both times the power cord was disconnected but the battery had a near full charge, and I wasn't warned off low battery.
the first time I was working on a site in iweb and the second time my dad was browsing firefox with the mbp on his lap when it powered off. I've had lockups before but I've never had an instant poweroff like this.

It's a 10 month old 2.16 core 2 with 2gb of ram running the latest osx.

just to share experience, mine is a 2.16 with 2gb just like yours. i usually don't shut it off or restart unless updates or troubleshooting. i put it up to sleep one evening to found it in a limbo state in the morning, i opened the lid and the screen was lit (blue) but nothing came up and once it did shut off in some way. i don't know what could have done that except some apps acting weird but i can't see what could have shut it off.

It is a power issue of some sorts. Call Apple about it. My old MBP had this as well, they may be able to give you a new battery, but it is likely some other issue. Also use check out apps like coconut battery and see what % your battery has left.
