I find that if I put my computer to sleep, normally for a long time, my laptop won't wake up when I open it. When closed, the sleep light pulses like normal and turns off when I open the computer. I can even hear the computer working, most likely the HD, when I put my ear to it, but it won't wake up. I've tried adjusting the brightness but it's not even that.

Just out of curiosity, how much time do you give it before you do a hard reset? I have had a similar problem from time to time, and have found it can take up to 30-35 seconds before I can use the computer. This tends to happen when the computer has been asleep for a long period of time.

I think it has to do with the amount of applications that you have open before you put the computer to sleep. It use to happen to me when i close my computer in hte middle a few tasks and open windows.

Try closing apps before you put it to bed.

It's not the battery, it's happened when it's plugged in. That's actually mostly when it happens (but it still won't wake it up even after I unplug it). I'll try the application thing. I give it plenty of time so it's not that.

fireant202,

Have you found a solution? I have the same issue, newest mbp. I think it only occurs when connected to my external monitor - when it goes to sleep, I often can't wake it up (or at least the displays won't wake up, either the laptop or the external, I think the computer wakes up).

Is this the case with you fireant202?

if when you open it it doesnt come back from being asleep, just press F2. I had the same problem and this works 100%.

tried that, its not the screen brightness, its just asleep (as indicated by the front light which often glows or is stuck on when I try and wake it).

I get this a lot. It takes an age to wake from sleep. Sometimes have to try four or five times to wake it. Sometimes will just not wake and have to reclose it, reopen it and try again (this has worked eventually all times - haven't reset)

As above, definitely not f2 brightness thing. And not battery related either, happens when plugged in, or not.

If it is related to the amount of Apps running, is there any official line on how to sleep your :apple: and how to wake it. Seems a commonly mentioned bugbear, slow to waken.

I also had this, you make it sleep and when you open it it seems dead, even take a minute or two to restart...only happened once or twice :)

This is a huge problem for me as well, coupled with the brightness issues getting stuck when it does wake to Glaring Blasting bright... Then to get screen to react to dimming (which f2 is dead at this state) I have to re-close, wait 20 seconds to wake up again, then screen brightness back to normal.

They are exchanging mine... See my post to help you determine if yours exibits these symptoms...

I hope my replacement is better, otherwise it is back to macbook; which I gave to an employee to get the bigger, and better one...So far not so much better.

hmmm...F2 has always worked for me when I had this problem. I guess yours is more serious. My problem was the same as yours, not brightness. Maybe you should call Apple Support.

Some unofficial solutions I've found is that either leaving your computer open or putting it to sleep manually (via the Apple>sleep button) works fairly well. Besides that turn off your computer when your not using it...maybe it's a heat related issue?

I've got the same issue. This is related to the "deep sleep" hibernate mode that newer portables (MacBooks & MacBook Pros) utilize. This is the issue someone mentioned in an earlier post where the data in RAM is immediately written to HDD when computer is put to sleep. This is to ensure that none of the data is lost in case power is lost entirely. Once you wake the computer it is supposed to retrieve this data from the hard drive and move it back into RAM for direct access. This process is what is causing the computer to delay or hang when it wakes from sleep.

None of the tips and tricks mentioned will resolve this. I've been dealing with it for a while, plus I've called Apple Care to document. If Apple does not find a solution (via update if it is software related) I will be looking for a hardware replacement. I recently upgraded from a 12" PowerBook to achieve ultimate performance-what I expect from a $3,000 MacBook Pro. I don't think I should be expected to push several arbitrary or different button combintations to make this computer function as it should. Steve Jobs expects nothing but perfection when developing these products and I do not expect that as a loyal Apple user I should expect anything less than. My 2 cents...

Well when it does happen, just hold the power button for around 6 secs, push it once to turn it on and it reboots pretty quick.

I have this problem every now and then. Sometimes the login screen flashes then the screen turns off. The fix is usually to shut the lid until the light starts flashing again, then open it. If that does not work I hold the power button.

It is almost like you wake up the computer, then for some reason it thinks it is time to sleep and shuts back off.

yeah, i've had the same problem on my macbook. Sometimes I can't get it out, other times it takes 10-20 seconds to wake up. I have my macbook so that it asks about a password when I wake it up. What about you guys. Maybe this could be part of the problem
