My MBP17 2.16 temps (IR)

So after reading the zillion threads and articles about heat/paste issues on the MBPs, I decided to pull out my own IR thermometer and get some measurements. In case they're of any interest, I'm posting the results here.

I measured the temp after the MBP had been playing UT2004 by itself for about an hour and a half.

Note - temperatures are in Celsius and are the highest I recorded for a given area.

Topside:

Right speaker area: 40
Left speaker area: 45

Right track (wrist) area: 32
Left track (wrist) area: 34

Aluminum strip above keyboard: 50 left and rightmost / 40 center

Keyboard: 39

Bottom:

Left and right: 34
Above battery/memory compartment: 48

What does it feel like, touching a 50 degree celsius, aluminum surface? Is it touchable? Can you continue using your laptop without letting it cool off?

Well - that is 122 F - why would you question if is "touchable"?

I like the sound of that, I'm moving from a 15" to a 17" and your temp is much lower than mine. My case has exceeded 60 degrees in some spots while encoding video.

I've left the MPB running UT2004 for the last two and a half hours or so (about four hours total now), and the temps have not increased over the initial measurements. Cooling fans are running, and they don't seem as loud as my G4 Al fans either.

I can still use the MBP on my lap (wearing shorts here) and it doesn't feel as warm as my G4 Al did.

And in case anyone is wondering - my screen seems to be nicely evenly lit, and I can only ever hear the whisper of a sound (i.e. the dreaded whine) if I put my ear right against the left grill.

More importantly, why would you touch it at all? That's where the cooling vents are; of course it's going to be hot.

You know, chips off to you for doing this, but all this heat crap is getting REALLY old.

If I had one and it was too hot to use on my lap, I'd take it back.

If it hurt to lay my wrists on it and type, I'd take it back.

If the machine stopped functioning or shut down to heat, I'd take it back.

And if someone doesn't have AppleCare on a laptop, well, enough said.

Oh, I definitely agree!

I just felt that since most people who don't have issues don't come and post "hey everythings cool!" - that it might be nice to show everyone that there are in fact some MPBs that won't whine you out of the room, electrocute you with the magsafe or spontaneously set fire to your pants

And if someone doesn't have AppleCare on a laptop, well, enough said.

Technically wouldnt everyone with a MB or MBP have AppleCare as its free for 12 months regardless and everyone of these machines is less than that...


But yeah, if its getting too hot, if its whining ..... just contact apple and report the problem.
