My Movie, My Shows on AppleTV

After reading through the forums here I am a little worried about the new AppleTV (that I was just about to buy). I have a first gen appletv that I have sync'ed with my Itunes (which just streams from the imac not downloaded). It works fine and dandy.

Heres the rub. I use my own media 99% of the time rather than renting etc... Is it try that I have dig through the computers menu now and that the tv shows just come up as one insanely long list. Now as I have nearly 4000 episodes (all legally bought btw) does that mean i get a single list with 4000 episodes with no sub folders ? The same with the movies do I get one big long list with the folders (i had grouped stuff such as starwars).

Also does it have to rescan the library every time I go into the shared computer folder? As it does with the iTunes sharing ?

If anyone can give me some advice on this I would be grateful.


It would be pretty sweet if someone did a youtube video of how this all works (hint hint :) ).
 
My understanding of TV shows is that they are listed per series, rather than having a sup folder like the old Apple TV apparently did.

The shows are still grouped together in series, but it will be a longer list than you would currently have, especially if you have shows with lost of series.

I'm not sure about the films, but I think that you will find these are a list, with no groups such as your Star Wars.

I'd agree with you that a YouTube would be handy for those of us waiting to get Apple TV's.

Sounds like the new one is a big step backwards
 
Of course it displays photos. Any folder on your computer, in iPhoto, and streaming sites like Mobileme and Flickr as well. There's also some built in photos and slideshows. One of the cool things about the ATV is you can use your pictures to set as the screensaver, when music is playing, or when a movie has paused for a while.
 
I have both apple tv,s. The old 160 gb one and the new one, but there is a difference between the 2.The old apple tv you could store your library, music , pictures, videos and so on. The new you can't, but you are still able to listen to your music and photos and video just it streams it from your computer, also netflix runs great on the new apple tv. I really like the new interface and pretty fast to.

When you switch it on does it have to rescan your library (like it does with two macs using the sharing) or does it happen instantaneously?

I will rarely use the rentals but will use my own library much more. Is the new interface annoying for this ?

I am considering buying a second old one (before they disappear) if it doesn't support my library the way it used to.

If TV episodes are named in iTunes with the show name, season, and episode #, then it will display each season of each series in the list.

Example: I have the complete series of Roswell (seasons 1, 2, & 3) in iTunes on my Mini. When I go to Computers -> Mini -> TV Shows ->By Show, I see three entries
  • Roswell - Season 3
  • Roswell - Season 2
  • Roswell - Season 1
The show name is in large type, and below it is the season.

List order on the new AppleTV is completely messed up. I don't know why the latest season is listed first. When you go into a season, the oldest show is listed first. If Apple always put the newest (or oldest) stuff at the top of a list that's fine. But to go back and forth is annoying. And all music playlists are alphabetical? Come on Appe! :mad:
 
Give it some time. It's the first week. Apple will update the firmware soon enough when iOS 4.2 is released in November.
 
that sounds more promising. If I can get a list of shows then click down to the episode list then i can live with that.
 
On a related matter does the sharing have to reconnect all the time? My sharing on itunes takes a minute to connect each time i go onto it. Id rather not have to do that every time. If it takes some time how often do you have to connect?
 
As I am in the UK I will only be using this to stream from iTunes (no TV rentals or Netflicks in the UK). All the reviews I have seen so far don't really show those menus, could someone post some screenshots?
 
TV 2nd Gen withyour own content reminds me alot of Front Row. not practical in comparison to the main set up of the TV 2nd gen main screen.
 
They definitely haven't finished/polished the handling of file metadata.

The way content is accessed/displayed now is a step backwards from the first Gen Apple TV.

Hopefully the wacky sorting, lack of correct nesting, etc. will be fixed in an update soon.

Instantaneously, when you turn it on your library is already available on both apple tv's one just has your library on the hard drive the other just goes through the computer.
 
This sucks how the Apple TV no longer has folders, you can't group TV shows or movies grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr so annoyed about this
