As the title says, my brand new 20" 2.66 iMac I purchased from Best Buy about two months ago seems to have a mind of its own.

Every so often (about twice a day) it either restarts or completely shuts down on its own in the middle of even the basic of tasks (Safari and iTunes).

Anyone else seem to have this problem or am I on my own? :(

That's probably exactly what I'm going to do :)

I was just wondering if there was a simple solution to my problem to save me the 40 mile trip to my local Apple store but really, it just gives me an excuse to go to said local Apple store :p

The problem you are having seems to be more common than I would have wished... as the same thing happened to mine... it would just shut down all on its own... and when I took it to the Apple Store.. the kid there was able to get it started, only to hear it ding over and over as it kept restarting. 20 days later and 2 seperate repair sessions with the store and it is finally fixed (but for how long?)

Take it back... do not wait.... take it back today!

Best Buy's return policy on Apple products is only 14 days though :(

Should I take it there and have them send it to Apple and give me a replacement or should I go to an Apple store? Forgive me if that's a stupid question, I just wanna make sure I do everything correctly.

Well.. call Best Buy first... ask them what to do. It's odd that Best Buy has 14 days, but Apple's own policy is 30 days replacement if you are not happy.

i can´t see best buy´s return policy as being important when it comes to this, apple made the thing, and so they have their own return policy. i´d imagine it only means best buy won´t take it after 14 days, but it doesen´t have anything to say on apple´s return policy.

If this is a stock iMac, (no 3rd party RAM).

1. Disconnect the power cord.
2. Disconnect any external items, except keyboard and mouse.
3. While the power cord is STILL disconnected, hold DOWN the POWER BUTTON for at least 10 seconds.
4. RELEASE the POWER BUTTON.
5. Hookup the power cord.
6. Restart your iMac.

If that does not do it, it is probably bad RAM, or another issue. I would return it.

Did you buy Apple Care? If you did, did you call them?
