Ok So I bought 3rd mac pro last week, that will be pushed to the limits
I got Apple raid card in it
here is what I doing to it
replaced 5770 with 5870
replaced superdrive with BR drive
Replaced 1 TB with 2 3TB blacks
installed rocket U 1144CM 4xUSB3.0 for external Drives if need to
What I need
PCI 480GB SSD what the best up there?
Need to replace my rocketU with something that can Drive USB 3.0 compact flash card reader
and need to add some more drives
purpose for this computer will be movie and video editing
Love everything in one box not like the new MAC PRO Minis :)

Is a SSD like the $517 Crucial M500 2.5 inch 960GB SATA3 Internal Solid State Drive (MLC) [ https://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=960GM5SSD1 ] out of the picture?

No it is not the fastest drive on the market Matt. It is 2 lower tier NAND SSD's RAID0'd together. It has functions that are slower than a majority of top tier SATAlll SSD's. It does have high sequential bandwidth. So the 5% of the time you can use it it is there for you. You will be bottlenecked by everything else it interacts with. It has subpar boot drive operations.
 
so the PCI drive drives are not very fast
I was told that they are one of the fastest on the market for the price
 
The Sonnet Tempo Pro can house two Sata III SSD providing 900+MB/s if you raid them. Cheaper than OWC's solution, but a bit bigger.

I have two-120 gig and one-240 gig and am satisfied with them; except for one reason - I need to reclaim my PCIe slots for more GPUs. They are fast. Later comments than my earlier one, about raiding SSDs do make sense. I've even had my two 120 gigs in Raid 0, but that equals a double slot into which I could place a GTX 780 Ti.

I just ordered SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 from sonnet will let all know how it work
 
My 1144CM will mount a Lexar USB3 reader, as I've said somewhere around here recently. It doesn't always mount the card when I insert it, but if I unplug (at the reader) and replug, then it does. It's not that much of a hassle.

Thank you my was doing similar thing so I just ordered an extra card
Will let all know how that card works
Now SSD what will be the best option for 480 Gb plus more size and a bit of a speed
Should I consider Sonnet Tempo SSD Pro [TSATA6-SSDPR-E2] it looks like a great solution

I could not get my new 1144CM to see my Sandisk USB3 card reader. I tried what you did and it appeared in the Finder. Unfortunately when I try to copy even one file out of it I get "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “3J008057.JPG” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)". Then the card reader disappears from the Finder.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Or not so fast. . .

I just tried the Sandisk USB3 reader with my MBP and it was no-go. The reader also disconnects when dragging several files from either a Sandisk SD 32GB Extreme Pro card or a Sandisk CF 32GB Extreme Pro card. It looks like the reader has issues.

So what is the fastest on the market? and by how much?
 
Just curious, I am running a 512GB 840 Pro in a Velocity x2 card and it rips along at 480+MB/s read/write. I think for what it is working for, boot, apps, iOS device backup, it is *plenty* fast.

Not that I question other's need for more speed, how does one gain in going even faster than I have with the above combo? I get it with my new Retina's 1TB PCIe SSD, it's the only drive in the laptop and scorches along at 900MB/s, but I am curious as to the practicality of it in using desktops with multiple drive options.

I look forward to hearing what the advantages are....

There is so much new stuff out I really do not know atm. It also greatly depends on what you are using it for. If you are streaming multiple 4K streams the OWC PCI solution would be a pretty great as a scratch volume. It just is slow at random and compressed data (that's a whole lot of regular user data patterns). Last time I checked the Samsung 840 Pro and Marvell based solutions offered up the fastest boot drive performance. But that was a couple months ago. Check SSD Review, Anantech Bench, and Tom's for more up to date figures and then weigh the results as they will all be slightly different (biased or not) and use different methods of testing. I just average and weigh towards my workflow.
 
I don't know if I fall into that particular user pattern group, because I am absolutely thrilled to have the Accelsior 960GB card in my MacPro 3,1!!!

It is much much faster than a single SSD (I have the Samsung 840 Pro), albeit on the standard interface...

Before picking up the Accelsior I tried the Sonnet with 2xSamsung 840 Pros, and never got it to work just right. I had problems with booting, had problems with space inside the Mac Pro (I have a GTX680, an Accelsior card, and a USB3 card), and finally it simply did not feel faster than the Accelsior solution!

So, I singled out the Accelsior as what works best for me, and as for speed, it is plenty fast. Booting into Mavericks is but a few seconds, and working in a 55K image Aperture library it is fantastic - All files are Nikon D800 RAWs, averaging 50MB.

PCI-e SSD are the fastest, just not this one.
This card is only "up to 820MB/s in PCs and up to 688MB/s in Mac Pro."

The new Mac Pro PCI-e SSD will be 1250MB/s read and 1000MB/s write. If you wanted to beat that you would have to spend some big cash, starting at a minimum with this:

which runs up to 2800 MB/s.

THEN you can say that you have the fastest drive on the market... but you'd probably have to walk to work after selling your car to pay for it.

They don't make Mac drivers for these OCZ cards. Since the HD is the slowest part of a modern computer, it needs to be the fastest it can be to get the most out of the rest of the computer. That's why I'm waiting for full pricing on the new Mac Pro with its fast PCI-e SSD before making my decision on what computer to get (or build).

You want a card with the chips embedded. Regular drives are restricted by their SATA interface even if they are mounted to a card. Go with the model that shows the fastest Read and Write rates in MB/s.

You are right, the Accelsior is not performing at its absolute best in a Mac Pro, but fact is that they say it delivers 688MB/s in a Mac Pro, and I have never experienced that it didn't:)

Other solution may theoretically deliver better performance, but often fall short. The Accelsior never falls short...
