Long story but my first one that I originally bought was declared DOA and among other issues the fans always seem to be on and the whole unit was REALLY noisy. Now the replacement is REALLY quiet and the fans hardly ever come on. I downloaded the new fan widget and it showed only one fan when I was surfing the net. Is this normal?

Haha, I love it. People panic and report problems when their fans are always on, and then panic and report problems when their machines are unexpectedly quiet.

Don't worry, as long as your temperatures aren't skyrocketing it's working as intended. Welcome to the world of blissful portable silence.

When I first switched from PC to Mac, I was unnerved by the silence of my iBook (a G3 700). I was used to Franken-PCs with big fans that sounded like a jet turbine. My PC laptops whined and whirred like a little missile. The iBook was quiet as a stone.

My iMac G5, which has much more cooling to do, is similarly silent. I have to really punish it to get the fans to spin up, and even then it's quieter than my Franken-PCs ever where. PC-using family and friends are confused by the iMac -- "it's so quiet -- are you sure it's still on?" and "where's the computer part?" :D

Bad advice.

Grab Temperature Monitor and install it to keep an eye on your temperature. As for the one fan, that's normal - the macbook only has one main cooling fan.

I can't believe someone took my post seriously....and only moments after I posted it.

Who on earth would take a MB back because it was too quiet? I thought people would understand that. Oh well.

Which model is the replacement?

silence is normal. My core duo laptop is silent fan wise..now I wish i could say the same thing about the replacement hard drive(a seagate momentus 5400rpm 80gb) apple put in after my first drive(a toshiba) failed.

They're supposed to be quiet. I have a MacBook and MacBook Pro and both of them run dead silent unless I really start doing something intensive.

Maybe its hunting rabbits?

Yeah, just check the temp. We all know a guy who mentioned how quiet his computer was and it turned out his internal fan had gotten stuck and two weeks later his motherboard was burning like a freebasin' Richard Pryor. You don't want to be that guy.

mine got up to 74 a couple of days ago, although I was doing some video stuff on my lap.

once I took it off it dropped pretty fast though. what sort of temp should it really never go higher than?

About 80C or so. Well it can probably go higher for the core but the heat also causes damage to other parts of the machine.
