My Noteshelf Review by using the app itself

Downloaded this note taking app a few hours ago and decided to write a quick review while using the app.

Thanks for the review! That was quite detailed and it looks like a great app. Other apps people may want to consider include Notes Plus and Note Taker HD. It's great to see that the notetaking apps have become so robust.

I use Notes Plus. I don't know if it is better. It's just the one I bought. One thing it seems to do that Noteshelf doesn't seem to is automatically sync to Dropbox. I like the fact that I don't have to actually go through the process of uploading my data. It does it all for me in the background.

I was a bit hesitant about download Note Shelf as I myself used Notes Plus, but I'm glad I did - I find it very very good...

I really really enjoy Notes Plus and I will probably go back to it when the new Version 3 update comes out - due to the PDF annotation and handwriting recognition - I can't wait for that one. You're right, notetaking apps are becoming more robust - and I think Notes Plus will take it to a whole other level with its update, with the inclusion of PDF annotation and handwriting recognition, as well as in-app widgets and an in-app browser...it looks great. I would like to see the templates similar to NoteShelf included in Notes Plus... would make it great, but I guess with PDF annotation, you could probably make your own templates and use them...

Hi. The templates look really nice. With iOS 5 and the updates things are quite exciting

May I know which stylus you guys using?

I use the Wacom Bamboo. I have no complaints about it, but I am still going to give a couple others a try so I have a point of reference.

I've used a bunch. My favorites are the iFaraday styluses. (I have the Artist and the RX models.) I've recently received the Adonit Jot Pro. It feels more like a true "pen" than other options but I've had some issues with writing at an acute angle (strokes not being recognized) that I have yet to resolve.

All in all, I have to say that I've given up trying to find the "magic stylus" that overcomes the weaknesses of the iPad's capacitive screen. Like getting to Carnegie Hall, the best advice is to practice, practice, practice with whatever stylus you choose.

Indeed, the app is nice. I bought it when it was on sale for 99¢. Only thing i wish they would add (and they wouldn't as in my email to the dev, they said no to this) is ink smoothing. Notes Plus does a very good job with that and the ink appears very blurry in noteshelf. Anyhow, I like it and use it quite a lot. I just wish it would have a 0.5 pen thickness (dev said they will add this in next update) and ink smoothing.

I have to say that the Notes Plus results look spectacular. I really like how the notes turn out in the PDF. Even my messy handwriting looks good.

As for the stylus issue, I just received the Targus and Griffin ones. I definitely like how they write better than the Wacom Bamboo, because they move a lot more smoothly across the screen. For some reason, the Bamboo has a lot of resistance, not to mention a larger tip.

My initial impression is that the Targus and Griffin are almost identical in form, so I'd recommend buying the cheapest of the two. I will be testing them out over the next week or so to see how they stand up to several days of note taking.

I really like Noteshelf. It has most of the features I need: export, cut & paste, pen colors, zoom writing, and most importantly natural ink.
One thing I would really like to see added is Penultimate style wrist guard. For people who don't know: it allows the user to adjust where the wrist guard is according to writing style. I'm a southpaw writer so I need the guard to the right of where I'm writing. Most (all) note apps have it at the bottom of screen, which is kind of pointless for me. Penultimate does a great job detecting where my palm is.
Now if Noteshelf implements something like that, I will be deleting all other similar apps....
