Hey Folks,

I have a wonderful 24" i Mac (mid 2007) still a great machine. It's currently running OS is 10.8.6 M/Lion. I upgraded my MBP to Sierra, but the old iMac can't handle it. BTW- It was painless installing Sierra and it seems great..!

I found that iMac's of 'Mid 2007' can run El Capitan 10.11… So how can I get Apple to allow me to download it? Or find the OS someplace else. (I don't want to use 'bit-torrents'.)

Any suggestion other that tossing my old iMac would be well received…

Thanks,
Mike

You can still get El Capitan from Apple:
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT206886

"OS X El Capitan remains available for Mac computers that can't upgrade to macOS Sierra, or that need to upgrade to El Capitan first.

How to get El Capitan
Now that macOS Sierra is available, you should upgrade to Sierra instead of El Capitan.

Do a few hardware updates like I just got done with and you can run macOS Sierra with handoff and clipboard support. Cost me $42 USD

nandor690,

Dude,,, you are killing me... What are the hardware updates... give me a few hints of what is needed. I've been in my iMac to install a new disc drive and then again to swap out a dead HD. So I know my way around the 'guts' of the iMac.

Thanks for the input!!

I have a 2007 20" and I too am upgrading parts on way.

CPU, 1x4GB ddr2 667, wifi card (2007 stock card not supported in sierra), 2nd HDD mount (replace dvd) and arctic silver paste total was £75 inc shipping.

i want a hd2600xt gpu but too expensive

At some point, you just have to confront the reality that you're trying to run an OS from 2015-6 on a computer from 2007.

Probably time to start looking for something new, or at least "newER" ...

I do agree somewhat.
but to replace the machine is at least £400.

Yes I am limited by the gpu for what I want.
But for £75 I have a better unit than before, will see me thru til can afford newer unit.

I love my old imac, but would like newer model if for GPU as WOT needs the 2600xt with 256mb to run well.
There will always be someone who does something, because they can though.

nandor690.... Large thanks for the info. Gonna look into it.

Fisherman...... I agree that new 'stuff' is great and sooner than later I'll be forced back into the rabbit hole, but it's kinda like my old dog... she's a little slower, fatter, still loves me, and does what is needed from a dog. I just hate to discard something that is still working like you dad's old Buick. Heck, it runs El Capitan great. (Actually, I just can't afford to buy a new iMac now.)

elf69.... I feel your pain.. I'm in the same leaky-boat.

I feel your pain too. Two years ago I really needed a laptop to go with my 2011 iMac. I simply could not afford to buy an older 13 inch Macbook Pro which is what I wanted then. So I got a 12 inch Lenovo x200 Thinkpad, 2.4 core2duo, 4 gb RAM, and 230 gb SSD and installed Ubuntu 14.04 on it. It runs great and even runs Windows XP(which I needed) in a window with Oracle's free Virtual Box. And so 2 years later I got a late 2013 2.6 ghz 16gb, quad i7, 256gbSSD. The x200 works great still but its dull, and I need more space on the screen, and now I find that I rarely use my iMac since most my work is in a mobile way.
