i have a 1st gen iphone on firmware 1.1.3 unlocked on t-mobile. the only reason i haven't updated it in so long is because i'm scared it will lock back up and i won't be able to unlock it again with the new firmware. i haven't messed around with my iphone in forever. i currently just use my iphone to talk and text. i have that tzones hack but it just gets email, i can't do anything else.

i dont want to switch over to att and i like my aluminum 1st gen iphone to go with my alu macbook! :p

if anyone is in the same situation or knows how to update the 1st gen iphone for the most recent firmware without it locking back up, let me know. i want to start using the appstore and everything.

Thanks!!! :D

Update it to the latest firmware using iTunes.

Download pwnage tool or quickpwn - Google "iPhone Dev Team" and you'll get there. I think http://www.quickpwn.com/ works as well.

Use one of these tools to pwn your iPhone and select "Unlock" in one of the menus.

This is a very brief and vague guide, but if you can figure it out, this will work. If you need more detailed instructions, let me know.

Here is a complete guide.

Enjoy.

if i follow this whole guide, will it delete all of my contacts?

that guide is too much and is probably gonna take forever? anything quick and simple?

i just wanna update it.. its already unlocked.

Only here will someone complain after receiving good, friendly advice. Hell, they even offered to help you out if you were having problems.

If you don't follow the guide, you will not reach your goal. Plain and simple. It won't take forever. I'm sure you could get it done in 1 hour, and that's stretching it.

Are you on Windows or Mac?

Also, because you are on 1.1.3, upgrading your firmware through iTunes to 2.2 WILL re-lock your phone.

by the way, THANK YOU macdim for helping me. lol

im on a mac.. and i tried to follow the guide step by step but when i downloaded the 2.2 firmware ispw.. and then through the pwnage tool, i couldnt browse for the ispw file. the 2.2 firmware i downloaded just shows up as a blue folder and it wont load in the pwnage tool.

To correct this:

In Safari, go to the menu bar item "Safari", then "Preferences", and under the "General" tab, uncheck "Open "safe" files after downloading".

Now re-download the firmware file as before, but this time it will look like a zip file instead of a blue folder. Find the file in the finder, click on it once, and press enter. This will allow you to change the filename. Don't touch the part to the left of the period. Change the word "zip" to "ipsw" and press Enter again. The file should now have an iTunes-like icon. Now use Pwnage tool to find your firmware and load it in.

Alternatively (and much easier), you can go into iTunes, plug your iPhone in, and when it asks you to update your phone to 2.2, click on "Download only" instead of "Download and install". This will download the latest firmware into your iTunes folder and Pwnage tool will automatically find it without you having to mess with changing extensions.

Hope this helps.
