Well i got 17.1 on my new Apple iPhone 15 Pro but have resisted getting it on my older iPad, but just about an hour ago Apple upgraded it to 17.1 i am not sure what it will cause if anything good or bad or how my iPad will take to it.

You say older, but it obviously supports the latest version of iPadOS....?
So it should be fine.

Auto-updates kinda does my head in sometimes, its just seem to life a life on its own.
A while back it gave you the choice of the 16 or 17 upgrade, i then picked 16 now the other day it just upgraded to 17 so i assume Apple made the decision for me.

They do seem to push out 17.1.1 now, guess they consider it "stable" enough.
Have been running it on my 11 m1 iPad and it has been running well.
Only surprise was the "astronomy app" that consumed a tiny bit of battery, its their new backgrounds and homescreen pics, quite cool.

Because a few with iPhone 11s were reporting problems with the 17.1 update.
Curently running iOS 17.1.1 on a 11, 13 pro and 14 at home.

11 is a "testphone" it only has the MS office suite and MS defender and are managed via intune. I don't use it much other than testing a few apps so that it works with the main company apps and 17.1.1 works great in my config.
Last time i charged it was 8 days ago and its still 17% charge left.
I wouldn't say it represents an average user as its pretty much stationary with few apps.

The other two has more apps and represent more what I think the average user has and still works great. I experience that the batterytime is better than on 16.7.2 on both the 13 pro and 14.

If OP uses the iPad plugged in all the time (which definitely isn’t recommended, but nevermind), then the main issue with all of these updates on the 1st and 2nd-gen iPad Pros is not all too noticeable, but battery life on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro has been utterly abhorrent since, at least, iPadOS 16. Earlier it was poor of course, at least since iPadOS 13, but iPadOS 16 pushed too far. iPadOS 17 probably pushes that further, but like I said, not totally relevant for the OP, even if using it plugged in all the time will destroy the battery sooner rather than later.

As far as the iPhone 11 goes, if screen-on time is 0 minutes, 100 to 17% in 8 days of pure standby is mediocre to say the least.

Well i have had iPads for many years and all of them have been on charger 100% of the time, none have had a battery failure.
The iPads and iPhones have a set cutoff when fully charged so i don't sse any problem with leaving them on charger i have not seen where Apple have posted about not leaving their products on a charger being a problem.

Doing that on my iPad or iPhone would drive me crazy, i use my computer for reaching my credit card provider also for my banking.

‘It can all be done on your phone or iPad. Why would you not take advantage of it. I can transfer funds from one account to another, pay all my bills with bill payable en track all charges. I get a text showing every transaction in real time. Only time I use my desktop with my bank is reconciliation at the end of the month.

I know it can be done i do some looking at amounts sometimes, but for me using my finger to poke letters and numbers from a iPhone or iPad with those small places to poke not something i want to do.
Also why would i need a text informing me about any transactions?

‘If someone is charging anything to your accounts the text message comes in handy. I am running a business and when one of my people charge or pay for something using one of my accounts, it is nice to know.

If one of your account become “compromised“ it is nice to know with a text message so you can shut the account down.

To each to his own.

From time to time i remove the charger cord and see if the battery will keep iPad working, so far it's never failed to keep iPad working.
My older laptops don't have the new Li Batteries nothing helps them they all soon die, my new MSI Stealth Laptop has the new Li Batteries and this is good, but i still use A/C hardly need battery.

It won’t fail like that, but if you use it unplugged for a while, battery life will be abhorrent.
