Even though this might just be rambling on my part, I feel that I should throw my two cents in as well.

At the beginning of the summer my monster of a laptop (3.4 Ghz hyperthreading, 80GB internal + 160GB internal HDDs, AREA-51M 7700 D900T NVIDIA DDR3 6800FXGO WITH 256MB MODULE video card, 2.5GB RAM, etc.) died on me. It was my baby and I took the upmost care for it. It was perfect for my needs (Powerful and portable), but that is what killed it. Too much power in too small of a space. After it died I began weighing my options (building a PC or converting to Mac), I chose the latter. I also wanted to stray away from the laptop scene as my past experiences haven't been the greatest.

Lo and behold, I set my sights on the iMac.

A beautiful machine, perfect for my portability needs (I take my machine back and forth from school a few times a year), and powerful (with an amazing OS to go on the top with the cherry).

Once I caught wind of the upcoming design, I knew I had to have it (as I'm a sucker for new "shiny" things).

So I have been lurking in the shadows of MacRumors, reading the various sites' predictions, and compiling it all into my own thoughts which is what I want to share now.

I feel Apple can release the new iMacs in two timeframes. Option A) Late July - VERY EARLY August. Or Option B) Late September - October.

Here are my reasonings:

Option A) This is to hit the Back-to-School Rush. Kids going off to a university for their first time, living in a cramped dorm, what better (than a laptop for space) than having a compact, powerful, beautiful machine to show off to their "new amazing roommates-future enemies"? Apple is all about Education so this makes perfect sense to release then. I say that this needs to be VERY EARLY into August because many schools start in the middle of August (my schooling resumes August 22nd). And if Apple waits too long into the month of August, many kids would not have their computers at the start of school. Having a computer is very close to a necessity now-a-days when you're in college. Online courses, registering, lecturing, notes, homework, quizzes, on and on and on. And many people could be forced to buy a different computer upon returning to school if the new design is not out by then.

The two main cons against this are: releasing a new design merely two months before Leopard and the "Back-to-School iPod promotion" currently underway. But I have some reasoning against both of these.

Many people think that Apple could potentially lose money by releasing the new iMacs so shortly before Leopard is due out becuase people will remain reluctant and hold on to buy the iMacs when they come standard with Leopard. From my readings it seems the complete opposite. It seems like people will run out and buy the iMac when it is released because they have been holding out too long as it is and their current machines are dying (like mine already did). And the people not as knowledgable of the "Apple world" will see the new iMacs and buy up and then afterwards find out that Leopard was going to be released shortly after.

With the iPod promotion going on right now, it seems like a perfect time to release a new iMac design. Since there have been recent rumblings throughout the Apple Community about OS/touch screen iPods, Apple could release the new iMacs with the current promotion. Promoting that you can get a "new" iPod with your new iMac before going back to school, only to have the actual NEW iPods be released shortly afterwards. This is the same psychology Apple is using right now with the iMacs. They are still promoting them as the new iMacs, even though we all know they are VERY old in Apple's eye as well as our own. I'm sure people would jump on the bandwagon of getting a new iMac PLUS $199.00 off towards an iPod. That's a Win-Win for everyone. Apple can continue to get rid of their outdated-soon to be updated iPods and consumers can have a "new" iPod as well. (I for one, would do that as I need a bigger iPod and would love getting $199.00 off).

Now Option B) The only reason I can suspect a Late September - October release is to be released RIGHT BEFORE or along side the release of Leopard. They could promote eachother, "synergizing" sales. They could also make a stage unveiling in Paris at the Expo.

I feel there are many cons to this Option, but again that is only my opinion. A couple of them are:

They lose out on the potential sales of an earlier release. Like I said above, I feel people will buy whether they know about the upcoming Leopard release or not. And Apple could lose out on cashing in with people who buy the system then the OS two months later (I would also be one of these people, but I get a rather nice discount through school, not to mention the AMP offer my school gives me).

Releasing the new design around a year (if not longer) than the last update could frustrate some Mac fans and push them away. Becuase it does seem like there is quite a bit of animosity in the air over this constant delay, that has been carrying on long before I joined here. (Some people have been waiting for an update since December '06, if not earlier, if my memory serves me correctly).

I feel I've been blabbing on enough but look forward to hearing what you all think about my thoughts and to input your own as well.

I know that I'm hoping for Option A so I can transfer all my media, documents, etc. over to my beautiful newly redesigned 24-inch (if not bigger) iMac, so I can take the new semester head on.

In conclusion, no matter what Apple decides, they will win either way. They already have a chokehold on our wallets and they know it.

Cheers,
Torrid

I say Tuesday Oct 30, same day as Leopard, and :apple:TV 2.0 (i.e. new mac mini)

However, I am hoping more and more that Jobs and Co. will surprise us mid-sept (after the back-to-school promotion) with an early Leopard release coinciding with new hardware.

i think apple would be plain stupid not to get the imacs out before the back to school season (incidentally, when does school start again in the US of A?

and incidentally ( will reword this as i dont want to cite a rumours site as fact) IF the rumours are true about apple holding a special event, then how time is there usually between apple announcing a special event and the event taking place? anyone any idea what the time frame for this was when apple announced the last imac revision in spet 06?

wow, that was a very good argument. I too am hoping for option A, just because I have been on of the ones who have waited since at least October to get one. But that was partly having to get the money in the first place.

What would be great for all of us, is if they release the new imac Late July- EARLY August, and have it come with a free new ipod, and a coupon for free leopard. I know this wont happen, but it would be helpful to us all.

leaving it till october would mean that more than 12 months would have elapsed between updates.

Iphone or no iphone, that is p!$$ poor (and thats being kind)

mid-end of august really wouldnt surprise me but very very much doubt it will go as long as retailers are running out of stock everywhere now

eg amazon uk citing 1-3 weeks
mac warehouse completely out of stock

and remember, up untill the store was taken down on june 5th, macbook pro availability was still displaying as ready to ship in 24 hours.

As I said in my original post, my first day of school is August 22nd. And as I can't claim that is EVERYONE's starting date, I'd give a week (two weeks max) buffer, either before or after that date for when Universities in general will resume classes.

wow, that was a very good argument.

gamerz, thank you for your compliment. And at this point, all we have left to do is wish and wait for Option A. Fingers crossed. Knock on wood. Pray to the Apple Gods above.

Has to be before back to school

I remember a few years ago Apple missed a machine (can't remember which one) for the back to school rush and it cost them big in lost sales a big black eye for their mistake - I don't think they will do it again.

I don't know the numbers but I have to believe that Aug/Sep are huge months for all computer manufacturers.

I think October 20 or whatever with lepard

disagree

that would mean over 12 months without so much as a price drop or update

if they were going to do that then i think the imac would have had a bump in specs round may/ june time.

im sticking with my original prediction of either july 31st or aug 1st

and like someone else said, its either july 31st or before, or a dell

If Apple release the new iMac at the end of July early August they are benefiting from the back to school buying rush plus benefiting from the iPhone hype. The iPhone is still featuring in the media. Apple will want to switch as many people as possible during the initial iPhone buying frenzy, the iMac is very attractive, Apple needs to update the iMac soon.

The Apple Store in my neighborhood has been packed everyday because the iPhone. I can't imagine that Apple would not try to capitalize on this.

You're quite right. The iPhone crowds won't be around forever. Now is the time to capitalize on this and get a lot of switchers.

I know for a fact Apple wishes to capitalise on the iPhone launch. It is just a matter of being patient. The new iMac will come before the end of August.

Well, as far as a big event, was there a big event for the macbook pro redue? When they increased the power for a lesser cost back at the begining of the summer I don't recall hearing about a big release event. I just saw it up on apple.com. I could be wrong though.

What price drop? The mbps have stayed the same price since they were released last year.

I don't think that's what he's implying. I think he meant that Apple's cost of the increased power came down so they were able to sell more power to consumers for the same price as it was before the upgrade.

That does make more sense. His post was very confusing.

My guess on this one is simply going to be after or when leopard is released. It just doesn't make sense to release a new iMac literally a month or two before they are releasing their new os. With the upcoming redesign, it would be very much like apple to reveal their new consumer based laptop as not only the prettiest hardware, but the easiest to use, with the most advanced os already built in. Leopard would be a huge selling point, and I don't see them passing that up. And there is also the fact that anyone buying an apple system in august or September is a little nuts, because they just basically guaranteed an added expense the following month, when they will without a doubt, not want, but NEED leopard...because we are all, of course, apple fanatics.

here's what I think:

Imac released soon = $ for Apple

Leopard released later = more $ for Apple

OR:

Imac released with leopard = Loss of sales

What I'm saying is that it would sure make us happier if apple released their imac with leopard, but then they would lose money, and every company is trying to get ways to make more money.

This would be a great way for them too make a little extra, but not to helpful for the consumers.

If you say that everyone with "without a doubt, not want, but NEED leopard" then it clearly doesn't need a "huge selling point." It's clearly going to sell itself (which I believe will happen anyway). And I don't believe people are nuts if they want to buy a nice new iMac in August...did you forget about education (a huge part of Apple sales)? Most people want a nice new (and preferably updated) computer before the start of most Universities in August.

I guess I see your point about returning students. However, in my 4 years at The University of New Hampshire, I always had a laptop, and didn't have any friends with desktops. Are you seriously willing to pack up and move a desktop after every semester? Are you going to bring an iMac to the library, or over to a friends to study with? Desktops are a little less functional for students. Get a MBP, it will be more powerful and a hell of a lot more useful/portable. And if you really need screen realestate, just get a ACD. Then, you'll have the baddest set-up on campus. So anyways, the people that I was referring to as being nuts would be those that don't NEED a new computer immediately. They would save money by waiting a month. And, as I have said before, I highly doubt they will be released before Leopard. This is the longest period of time without an iMac refresh. Common sense tells you that it means apple is waiting for something, and that something is Leopard. It's only a guess...but it's one i would be happy to make a gentleman's bet on.
