My personal thoughts on the new iPads

I went to the Apple store today to check out what all the hype was about with the new iPads.

I went around 7:30pm so it was pretty dead, nice and quiet.

My intitial thoughts, the design is pretty cool, the form factor is very nice, surprised how much thinner it is and how small the 11” looks to my eyes but the screen is surprising big and handling the iPad was very nice.

I checked out the 12.9”, IMO it’s still feels too big and I just can’t see myself carrying around an iPad that big around everywhere. Just didn’t feel comfortable holding it.

The new iPad is very smooth, ProMotion makes a world of difference, surprised how buttery smooth navigation is, I hope they do something to bring this technology to the iPhone in the near future.

Now here is my biggest annoyance, I have a 10.5” iPad Pro and the screen just doesn’t feel improved, like it’s the same type of screen in my eyes, and when I’ve been using my iPhone XS Max the screen on the iPad just feels dull? Maybe it’s the OLED effect.
Even my 10.5” screen looks meh now since I’ve been using the XS.

I understand we are still far away from OLED on the iPad due to cost factor, but the iPad is getting close to 2 grands so we should be able to get a decent OLED on it no?

If the new iPad had a better screen I would totally trade in my current iPad for it, the fact is Apple didn’t deliver this feature this time, I’m hoping next year we will see a considerate screen quality bump, maybe a higher resolution and better depth.

If you have a very old iPad then this is totally worth upgrading, but if you have the last year 12.9 and 10.5 then I’d think really long and hard before considering wasting your hard earned money on a decent upgrade.
I can still appreciate the easyness of using touchid, kinda bummed they are getting rid of Touch ID from iPad and iPhones.

If you have a very old iPad then this is totally worth upgrading, but if you have the last year 12.9 and 10.5 then I’d think really long and hard before considering wasting your hard earned money on a decent upgrade.

I dare say that those of us who have 2017 iPad Pros and have purchased the 2018 models do not consider our latest purchases to be a waste of our hard-earned money. I certainly don’t!

“Close to two grand” the 11” starts at $799. Although the 1tb models are much more expensive, that’s just for the memory upgrade & accessorie, etc. two grand is not the entry price.

I get your feelings... but am too much of an early adopter to pass this 11” form factor. Love the new shape and little bit more screen estate, though I totally hear you, that the 10.5” might as well be kept for another year, performance wise I don’t feel any difference.

I think these new iPads are incredible beats and simply are stunning but are now being held back by iOS to truely show off their potential. Especially now with USB-C these new iPads have a lot more to offer assuming Apple allows for external storage, handling more than 2 multiple windows. I’m now even more excited about iOS 13

I just bought the new 12.9 and I love it. I’m coming from a first gen 12.9 and I can tell a world of difference. Another plus for me is the size. I carried my first gen 12.9 as may daily “computer”, Took about 10 days to two weeks to adjust to the size. People carry laptops daily. Even the gen 1/2 12.9 IPP are samller than a laptop. So daily carry isn’t an issue. Especially now that it’s even smaller. If I had had a second gen pro I might have been more reluctance to replace it.

At this point I’m planning on keeping my phone 3 years and iPads 5.

So I can justify upgrading considering I’m using an iPad Air.

I can get 5 years easy out of this new one. The air only has a gig of ram and still works great.

I got my 12.9 yesterday. I really like it and the pencil. I had the first generation 12.9 as well and this one is a big improvement. Glad I bought it. I also have an Xs max, but still like the screen on my new iPad.

The design is pretty good but I am a bit annoyed by the viewing angles of the screen and the huge bezels. Form factor is great though.

Technically you are right about the LCD not being improved. We are still on 264 PPI. But then again, it still looks crisp so why do we actually need more than this? I have a Mini 4 with 326 PPI, and I can literally not see a difference unless I compare the tablets one inch from my eyes. The whole the-more-PPI-the-better is pointless. It's something Samsung and other manufacturers keep talking about because they have nothing else to offer. Normal people cannot see the difference, nor do they care.

Regarding OLED: The contract ratio is nice, but I personally wouldn't want OLED on a tablet where I show static images for hours at a time. It could be the status bar in safari or simply the light background during iBooks/Kindle. Burn-in WILL happen at some point.

So all in all I think LCD displays are still great for tablet. Especially when people tend to keep their iPads for many years. LCD simply doesn't get burn-in or wear down like OLED.

I picked my 12.9” 256 GB Pro up on launch day, and like it a lot. I’m coming from a gen 1 12.9” Pro, and like @RevTEG, it was my ‘main’ device. My biggest complaint is a current lack of 3rd party cases, but that will get fixed quickly.

Let's just start with the fact that OLED and LCD are completely different display technologies. On OLED displays you don't use backlighting. On LCD displays, it is the backlight that defines the brightness.

OLED wear happens because individual pixels are worn out at different rates. The blue pixels wears down faster than green and red. A worn down OLED pixel CANNOT be brought back to original brightness.

LCDs don't get burn-in over the years of use. The brightness of the LED backlight might decrease slightly if you use high levels of brightness, but you will never see anything that resembles OLED wear. The LCD simply doesn't work that way. You might have temporary image retention if it's a poor quality display (like the LG displays on the iPad Mini 2).

"Burn-in protection" will help for OLED, but ultimately those shifted pixels will also be worn down.

I had the 10.5 and just upgraded to the 12.9. They did a great job with making the larger size feel light and portable. I had the previous 12.9 and ended up selling it and getting the 10.5 because it felt to big. After 3 days with the 12.9, it’s great. This year I have essentially gone one size up in all my devices, moving from a MacBook to a 15” MacBook Pro, an iPhone X to the iPhone XS Max, and now to the larger size iPad Pro. I couldn’t be happier.

I had the 10.5 and just upgraded to the 12.9. They did a great job with making the larger size feel light and portable. I had the previous 12.9 and ended up selling it and getting the 10.5 because it felt to big. After 3 days with the 12.9, it’s great. This year I have essentially gone one size up in all my devices, moving from a MacBook to a 15” MacBook Pro, an iPhone X to the iPhone XS Max, and now to the larger size iPad Pro. I couldn’t be happier.

Pretty much the same story here, except I'm still using my 13" MBA. I went up in size because they showed that the new 12.5 was the size of a sheet of paper. Everything I own will accommodate a sheet of paper from my SEV jackets to my purses. So I'm very pleased. I also think the entire design is gorgeous and the screen is killer.

I am a 10.5 Pro owner who upgraded. I really like this form factor and using Face ID instead of touch ID, and this time around the smart keyboard folio feels MUCH better - this feels like a more complete "product" when put together than the previous generation. The screen being similar or 'not improved' doesn't even come into play with me. The sum of the rest of the improvements made this a worthy upgrade.

Image depth? Do you even know what you are asking for?
Anyway, read what Whoakapi wrote as he explains it quite well why LCD really is better technology.
OLED gives you deeper blacks but you sacrifice a lot in return. LCD has been almost perfected over the years and its by far better choice. Until OLED solves the issues then I will always go for LCD. Hence why I am getting latest Sony X900F instead of the OLED A9F. Don't wanna babysit my tv
Regardless, it is more likely that we will jump to microLed instead of going full OLED but that is years away so maybe OLED will go everywhere in the meantime. Who knows but I'm gonna try really hard to stay away from it. Not worth it

Reloading tabs on that Air (I had it) was the kicker for me to trade up. Not sure if it still does that in iOS12.

This is a common theme on MR. People are insistent they need the most ram, the largest hard drive, etc. So they always quote the highest prices or top end. Why "Most" people would need a TB on an iOS device escapes me.

I read some of this as "I can't afford" or "it's too expensive" because for some reason they have to have the range topping deal. But the base model and it becomes so much less expensive.

Going to try seeing the new iPads today glad others have seen and have commented about them in this thread.
I just returned from Best Buy and getting my first look at both new size iPads, and they look very nice I like the way you just swipe to view items on screen, really did not notice any real improvement in screen quality or brightness next to a older 2017 iPad.
Best Buy’s WiFi would not allow me to get on web sites,so could not see how they handled the net.
Was happy to see them but will be waiting to see how buyers report about what they find and how happy they are after using them a while.
