I will not update my iPhone 3G to 4.0-- I am sure there will be a great deal of difficulty jailbreaking the OS 4.0

So, I will buy the new iPhone HD (or whatever they are calling it) and then keep iPhone 3G on the old OS, jailbreak it, and run mywi so I can tether my iPad or Macbook.

Shouldn't I be able to just pop out the sim card from the new iPhone and pop it into the old whenever I want to tether? Will this work?

Maybe, maybe the new iPhone will use the micro sim that the iPad uses....

You'll find out more in June.

If it does use the microsim (which I doubt somehow), I guess I could pop out the iPhone microsim and pop it into a 3G iPad so it surfs for free.

But wouldn't it just be easier for apple to enable tethering then?

I completely agree with you. It's one of the things I was hoping Apple would announce as making a comeback. After all there are now several phones on the market that can turn into wifi hotspots for devices to connect to without the carriers permission. I know the original tethering in 3.0 was removed at AT&T's request.
