Everytime I try burning a disc at 8x speed on my Superdrive, using Toast, it fails at about halfway.

However, its fine when burning at 4x. Is there any way to fix this or is it a fault with the drive that needs repairing.

It happens with whatever I burn, and whatever disc I use.

The exact error is:

"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x09, 0x01
TRACKING SERVO FAILURE"

from what i understand, the type of your disks can make a difference. Apple for whatever reason seems to make disks that work great with burning. sure, you're paying a premium, but they'll work. with the cheap-o disks, well... i have had problems with those at high speed burns.
