LOL when I go to my isp's speedtest page now, there's a note in the display from the provider of the testing software that says "The license for this application expires in 14 days."

Dontcha love it... best way to get around customers finding out their rated speed is half the billed-for speed: don't renew the speedcheck license!

btw my 3Mb service was 1.4 when I ran the test. Pretty good for a saturday night. When it gets to 384 Kbps :( then I hang it up and go watch a DVD.

+1 ^^^ That is scary funny! I wonder when the person that came up with that solution will become a vice-president for your company; b/c no way could a senior executive come up with something that benefits the company, and screws the bottom-of-the-ladder employees......:p:p:p

yeh to hear some of the employees talk, the co. is pretty good at pinching the last possible dollar, so... no surprise waiting until the last minute to renew any user toolbox item they might think they could let slide. I have a feeling they did not realize the warning would pop up on the display when the module executes.

...
Is there some law against going directly to Speed Test's webpage?

Of course not; it just cracks me up for Frontier to feature a speed testing tool on their customer toolbox page, when right now the use of it generates a "reminder" that the company's license to use the thing is about to croak.

If their cashflow is that bad ;) then maybe I should be thinking about a switch to the only other alternative around here, TW cable... but I probably burned my bridges to them when I had them take their darn cabling off the house after cancelling TV in 2007.

That's not "burning bridges" that's demolishing bridges...:p

Yeah I am a brat and was never one for doing anything half- heartedly... at first they said oh we don't do that if you cancel your cable TV, we just turn it off and leave the cabling on the place and to the pole for the next resident.

I said yeah look, I'd be here 'til they took me out feet first in a box, so please take it off. They said well it's not our policy. I said can I have the name of your counsel so my counsel can see how it is, exactly, that you spell the word "policy" and he can explain how I spell "my house"?

Then they said they'd have someone out in a couple of days and was that okay with me. I said sure, thanks. The truck, with two guys (and two ladders!) was there 45 minutes later, and it was done four minutes after that.

Sometime later I realized that if broadband ever came out here, I'd be way past dead in the water with these people. Doh! I am living proof you can be wrong when you're right. :)

So I have Frontier for my net access and long may they profit but not if they actually do ever cap us at 5GB per month for a wired DSL connection. Right now they and TW Cable are at a standoff on caps, I guess. And the economy is keeping a lid on that idea, too many subscribers already bailing.

In the meantime I just checked and now it says that Frontier's license to use the speedtest software expires in 12 days... maybe it's time to phone the tech support and remind them to pay the bill.. it's doubtful that anyone who works for Frontier actually ever uses the thing and why would the webmaster check a page so easy to put together.

It would be more fun to let the thing expire  and THEN call them.
