Just discovered this neat little program today.

It makes icons of your pictures for one-touch calling right from your springboard. Check out my screenshot below.

It takes a while to set up because the program uses Safari to create icons using the Web Clips technology. It takes forever if you have a lot of contacts though. And it takes around 7-10 seconds for the call to actually be placed after you touch the icon. Once you touch the icon, I think what happens is Safari launches and opens up the FaceCall program which then opens up the Phone application and dials.

I wish the delay was much less. But it adds a nice little touch to your phone! Is there a similar program but better currently in the AppStore right now?

our 2 cents (FaceCall's authors)

Currently Apple prohibits third party applications to install other applications. The only and legal way of install applications in the iPhone is through the App Store. So we can't create mini-apps from FaceCall with that neat photograph as icon and install it on the springboard. In the springboard can only appears two kind of objects: applications and web-clips. The idea of having speed dials icons right in the screen was so cool, that we couldn't surrender. So we do use web-clips as a workaround of the apple restrictions. That web-clip needs to launch Safari web browser to make the call (but it do not connect to internet, don't worry, all is local). This Safari stage is the delay you see when you tap on an icon. Safari, then, launch FaceCall, which is the ultimate responsible of establishing the phone call using standard tel: URL scheme. There's no other way that we're aware of, to make phone calls from a web clip without prompting the user each time.

We don't know of any similar app, but we are just about to release an new version that will speed up a little the call phase and improve the overall experience. Stay tunned.
