All those shots are very, very good.
The bird shot and the shot of the yellow rat snake are particularly nice.

I wonder how "phone-pic quality" is going to improve from what we see above, to what's going to be possible five years from now...?

Interesting. I'm surprised by the saturation and contrast.
The iPhone X has new algorithms for its treatment of photo's and improved sensors. As much as I was surprised by the quality improvement of my 8 plus over my old 6, I have to shoot in RAW with a third party app and then edit the images to get these sort of results.

--------------

The Portrait Mode used on the snake and the bird photo's still has some issues in blurring bits that shouldn't be blurred, but if you don't look closely it's pretty impressive!

The lower part of the front orchid is blurred, the end of the birds beak is blurred, a lower section of the snake and some of the twigs are also blurred when they shouldn't be. I reckon they will improve on this sort of thing over time through updates though.

Yep. You should see some selfies I was testing. The blur needs work. It’s not as good as Pixel 2's. Not even close.

Without a doubt phone cameras are getting better and better.
My iPhone 6 from only 3 years ago is rubbish by comparison ;)

Cheers :)

Took this photo from my couch of my dog with the iPhone X . This picture really impressed me as it was pretty low light conditions. Taken in portrait with stage light effect.
