My screen has suddenly completely blacked out!

Hi - please could somebody help? I sent an sms with my iPhone and tried to return to the home page but it locked up (not unusual) but when I have picked it back up after a few minutes the screen is completely dead. The phone has received an sms back as I have heard the alert sound, and when I plugged the phone to my computer it made the usual connection sound too. But there is absolutely no activity on the screen, even with hard or soft reset. Has anybody else had the same problem?

Did you try a hard reset? Hold the home button and lock button for 10 seconds.

thank you! you're a star!!! I was only pressing the top (lock?) button and
not the home button...
