Hey guys,
This thread is kinda 50% rant but i am also genuinely interested in experienced Apple user's opinions.
This thread might end up long so for those that don't want to read it, essentially, I'd like to know if I joined Apple at a temporarily bad moment and they will become good again in 2018... or have I made a bad call and joined the party far to late, as they are on the way down and out. Or of course, there is potential that none of the above are true, and my negative experience is unique to me, and perhaps I am being to critical.
Anyway, my story is that I have been an iPhone user since the 3g. I have never had a complaint and still think iPhone is the best software and hardware of any phone. My allegiance to the iPhone was impenetrable. I hadn't used any other Apple Product before. I am a very experienced windows user... Windows 10 is great, but I wanted integration. Having my phone and computer talk is really what started my desire to shift to Apple. Plus, I deemed Apple to be perfectionists... premium... trustful.
So since December, me and my girlfriend have got 2x iPhone X's, an iPad Pro, Macbook Pro with Touch Bar, iMac 5k, Apple TV 4k, 2x Apple Watches and lastly, Apple Music.
Now, I don't expect everything to be perfect... but I do expect £10,000 of hardware to behave like £10,000 worth of hardware. It isn't like I bought a Mini Cooper and am getting annoyed that it doesn't keep up with my neighbours Ferrari.
So lets break down my experiences and opinions on my new tech. Please bare in mind, that i will focus on the bad... but obviously there is plenty of good as well.
Iphone X - Still pretty happy with apple phones. It glitches and freezes more than Id like a thousand pound phone too... but I am still happy with iPhone. I am NOT happy that Apple as a company throttled peoples phones and did it on the sneak. That is not something anybody should defend. I look at Apple as a premium company and they should treat their customers as premium clients. I just hope this isn't the beginning's of an evil Apple.
Apple TV - At first i was happy because everything looked so much sharper than when using my LG OLED's built in software. But then I started seeing freezes, glitchy movements when scrolling around and bugs that only a restart will fix. I never had any bugs on my LG smart software... and here we are with what is essentially a £179 piece of software and gives me a lesser experience. Airplaying to it was really my reason for getting it... but even that airplay seems to be SLOWWWWW and sometimes just doesnt work. Sometimes I cant find apple TV as an option to airplay too.. sometimes I do but tapping it doesnt wake up the Apple TV.
Macbook / iMac - I know people moan about windows crashing, but in fairness, I cant remember the last time windows actually crashed on me. We upgraded a £200 HP laptop, to a £2500 macbook Pro. And it froze on us for no reason in the first week... like an actual freeze. I don't think I've ever actually seen a computer freeze in the last decade. My partner was just doing basic computer tasks and for no reason it froze forcing us to restart and lose our work. The mouse just stopped moving, no keyboard keys worked, no button combos worked. Just a total software freeze.
Also whenever I wake up the laptop its on a ANNOYING SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR SCREEN... god what is with that damn screen. I am the admin... their is no such user as a system administrator but yet, there it is forcing me to click "switch user" because while on that screen, my fingerprint won't work as the system admin avatar just shakes angrily at me. Pressing the switch users button, takes about 4 seconds before it actually works and then its just 50/50 whether my user will accept fingerprints as a login option or force me to enter password.
I also seem to have a weird problem streaming video, which happens ALL THE TIME on safari. Where the video will just freeze, but audio will continue, until I move the mouse. Switching to chrome seemed to fix this, although it has done it once on chrome too.
Also their continuity kind of sucks. Sometimes when I click the handsoff browser to open up a page from my phone it just doesn't work. Nothing opens. Sometimes a blank browser opens. When it does work, it is slow. The copy and paste continuity is so glitchy its un useable. If I copy something on my mac and then try to paste it on my iphone, I struggle to even bring up the paste option because its lagging so bad.
These small integration perks are the reason i invested so heavily to get into the apple ecosystem.
Apple Music - I think the service is fine, but the options of how to play it are horrendous. I am really hoping that Airplay 2 sorts all of this out, but in the meantime it is ridiculous. I knew already I wouldn't be able to stream direct to my Sonos Speakers... I also know that Airplay2 WILL fix that, so I won't touch on that. But what I do have a problem with, is that even my £1000 apple phone, struggles to play to my £179 Apple TV. This should be flawless... its apple to apple. The most expensive phone on the market, to the most expensive TV software on the market.
For starters, if I am airplaying to my TV and then on my iPhone lock screen, decide to scrub the playbar to play later in the song it will 50% of the time just pause. So I then hit play. Scrub more, pause, press play this will happen everytime until I disconnect the airplay and reconnect a couple of times. Not to mention the 1 second lag between what I do on my phone and the TV is hard for my ears to accept.
Secondly, if I am playing music to my TV from my phone and sit infront of my mac, I should be able to control it with my Mac and then with my phone.. and then my ipad and then my Macbook. Seemlessly. But nope... each device is separate and there is no continuity between them.
---------
Anyway... that's just my experience. Again, there is obviously good points too, but thats not what this thread is about.
I'd just like to know if these sorts of frustrating bugs are new to Apple... and maybe people are universally annoyed at High Sierra, iOS11 and Apple TV and likely they will come good again?
Or is this the start of things to come and it will only get worse?
Or maybe even these sorts of bugs always have existed, always will exist and I just need to accept them if I want to join apple?
Cheers all
