Here is my take on why AT&T is not releasing any pricing/plan information on the iphone. The price will be flat ($499/599) for new and existing customers. If they were to say this well in advance, a lot of people will sign up now and get a free phone and then turn around and sell that phone on ebay and get the iphone come D-day. What do you guys think?

Actually I believe it may be the opposite. I work in a COR retail store, and the company (at&t) would much rather have us sign up customers now and then let them buy the iphone on June 29th...(being that it MAY not require a commitment at all). To be honest with you we are actually being encouraged to lock a customer into service asap. I believe if we gave out too much iphone info people would wait and then MAYBE sign up on June 29th. Right now most customer interactions are going something like this:

Customer: "so you guys getting that iphone soon?"

Rep: "yeah, June 29th, but honestly we're not being told any information about it. We dont' even know how many we're getting might be 50 but probably not...more like 5. If I were you I really wouldn't wait on it, there are so many things up in the air about it. I would recommend getting you signed up today and if you're not happy with your new phone you can exchange it within 30 days and then get the iphone."

Customer: "yeah I gues that does make sense..."

Rep: "Great...let's get you going!"

Dang, that's a great selling technique, but it wouldn't work on me. muahahaha

The rep at my local AT&T store told me NOT to get another phone, but to wait to switch my service from Verizon until I know I can get the iPhone. Her reasoning was that I might not be able to get the coveted iPhone within 30 days, and would be stuck with the temporary phone I bought.

Strangely, she also said that the directives she's been getting from corporate say to not encourage people to sign up now, but to wait.

I'll wait, but only because I'll be getting the iPhone at the Apple store, and somehow I doubt they'd perform something like processing a return on a phone.
