I think its funny how Star Trek has had hand held devices like this for 20 something years in their shows. And I even told myself a while back "we need something like this." Apple finally made it happen.

I am still not sure if I like the entire paperless book thing, though, as I like having a library. But this thing is great for being able to get net access from anywhere around the house. Is the Touch convenient enough to browse the internet with for a few hours? No. Do you really want to lug your laptop everywhere around your house? No. The iPad is the perfect gap filler. Small enough to have anywhere for quick and easy net access and not too big to be inconvienient. Would I use it in place of the Touch outside the house? No as it does not easily fit in your pocket.

And what about computing power? Think about it, when was the last time you used all of the computing power of your laptop/computer? Most people never do. The average person uses maybe 1/1000th of the computational power their computers are capable of. Everyone's computer is capable of doing extreme calculations (at different levels of performance of course) from simple physics to calculating a satellite's trajectory through the universe. Computers laugh at doing simple things like taxes, watching videos and coasting the internet. This is where the iPad comes in. It will do everything for the average user and the power users will use it for when they don't need their power tools. It is the gap filler of the computing world.

And this is exactly how I do it now. I have my 600+w consuming PC gaming machine turned on only when I game, and I use my lightweight mini (both hooked up to a 24") for the rest of my regular tasks. I can finally throw away my 6 year old Dell Laptop that ALL I use for is surfing and emailing before bedtime and replace it with the iPad.

Yeah, all the haters are like "They pioneered nothing new," but guess what? Apple made it work for me with how I want to use it in a sleek and hassle free package.

Well why not just use a netbook which can do everything an iPad will do, and more, for less money? With no flash support, the iPad can't view 75% of the video on the web. I know Apple wants to lock us out of Hulu so we'll be forced to buy iTunes content, but again, why not just get a nice netbook instead and not have to put with that kind of crap?

And how are you going to use the iPad at bedtime? Are you going to lay it flat on your lap which will be OK for typing but not screen viewing? Or, are you going to put it on it's tripod on your lap (very awkward), which will be good for viewing, but terrible for typing.. Or you could just hold it upright with one hand while typing with the other--yeah, that will be really fun after after about 30 seconds.. Again, a netbook wins for less money.

Yeah, I'd still throw away your 6 year old Dell laptop, but I sure as hell wouldn't buy a crippled device like an iPad.

Perhaps you should read through the Apple support forums and then get back to me on that "hassle free" aspect of some of Apple's products.

Which proves what exactly? In comparison to what? Windows? Sometimes I wonder why people hang around Mac forums if they clearly don't like their products.

The iPad has No moving parts. No chance of it falling on the floor and snapping a hinge, no chance of the hard drive spinning south, no chance of my 7 year old lettings crumbs falling on it and gumming up the keys.

And have you seen Netbook pricing with a SSD? They are around $400-$500. Flash? Eh. All I read are business and engineering blogs. And MacRumors, of course. :D Watching videos? I highly doubt I will as all I ever do in bed just before going to sleep is last minute reading. And you have never heard of those comfy bed back things for reading in bed? They are comfy. You should look into them. ;)

I have no idea what people do with their stuff, but my Mini and Power Mac have been more than stellar. And the mini is on 24/7. As long as I don't use the iPad as a serving plate, I'm sure it will hold up. :)

I am all for paperless text books. I hated having to carry 30lbs worth of books in college.

What's the boot time on a netbook (genuine question - I've never owned one so I don't know)? I suspect it'll take quite a bit longer than the time it takes to swipe a finger.

The netbook's clam shell design will be much less comfortable for casual use, plus they are slow, most are really ugly, etc, etc. I share the OP's needs for this type of device. I'll definitely get an iPad -- just not sure which version.

Because they look like something for my friend's 4 year old daughter. I cringe when looking at them in the electronics section of best buy. They dont look like they are constructed well at all.
Hey, just my opinion.

If you think a netbook plays flash video well, and you feel netbooks have a great web experience? You probably are one of a few that think so. I have used at least 5 or 6 different models via my work, they are all slow, unresponsive and a pain in the ass to use. I was offered a free one and after a week gave it back, total pc of S#$T.

I get most teens/young adults may think they are cool and appeal to them because they are cheap, but quickly realize they won't play the games, watch the HD video and deal with their media like they thought it would.

Look up any reviews of the Archos 9 tablet PC with Windows 7 on it, I have yet to find a favorable review that says wow this thing hauls ass with W7 and is so smooth to scroll web pages. Play any HD video and it damn near shuts the thing down, one review said he was getting about 2 FPS on HD content, and that was form the HDD not streaming. Archos is the only pc tablet I know of currently out for sale, HP may launch a better version but I doubt it will be much better as they still have a full blown OS trying to run on a low power CPU and a OS that is not fully modified for touch use. Before you say "Windows 7 supports touch use!!" umm ya if you consider dragging a mouse pointer around the screen hoping to get it to click on the right spot then ya, but it's not true multi touch technology.

He he, that's exactly what I was thinking! :D You must be old like me.....:p
I was also thinking that I can't believe the display isn't widescreen. And, there is no 'phone? No 'phone?? Why would this device not contain as one of its' apps, a phone?

Rich

Help iPad as personal computer

I was planning on buying a Macbook, but now with the iPad, I am leaning more towards it since my use fits perfectly the iPad.

BUT....

What do I do when I want to sync my iPhone, iPod, the same way I did with my current Macbook? Could I do it with the iPad?

Could it really work as a personal and only computer in the house?

No it can't. It's not a standalone primary computer. Jobs and the crew make that clear in the Keynote. The iPad needs to be synced to a computer. Software updates are down through a separate computer. I would not buy an iPad if you do not have another computer in the home, even if it's just for software updates and backing up your data.
