I have been using iChat since I got my MacBook a month ago but I downloaded Adium because everyone on MacRumors seems to be in love with it. I've been using it for a day and a 1/2 and I have three major problems with it and I'm hoping to find out solutions here. I've asked one of these questions in another thread but never got any response.:( Please help me out :)

1) PERSONAL FONTS
I do not understand or know how I set my personal font in Adium. I went into preferences and then messages and then set the font to a particular color and a particular text and I checked the boxes that said "show received message fonts and colors". I was thinking this would let me and the buddies I chat with each have our own indiviudal unique fonts. However, whenever I do this it seems to make my and my buddies fonts one the same. All of my buddies and I have the same font (the one I chose to be my own unique one). How can I make it so that Adium shows mine and my buddies own indivudal fonts?

2) BUDDY ICON
I originally set my buddy icon to the icon I use for my Macbook (you know the one you see when you log in to OS X). I now changed my buddy icon to a picture from iPhoto but it won't seem to register in Adium. I went back and changed in numnerous times and closed Adium and restarted the computer but it still shows the icon that I use for my Macbook log in. How can I chnage my buddy icon?

3) OLD CHATS
I had originally downloaded Adium 2 weeks ago and didn't like it that much. But 2 days I go I decied to give it another shot like I mentioned. However, when I IMed one of my friends the chat that we had had 2 weeks ago showed up first. So Adium showed the exact chat from two weeks ago followed by the chat from today. How can I fix this?

I just want to say thanks to all the people who help out on this messageboard. I've had some pretty big problems and I've always gotten great responses from you guys. Please help me out with this one.

1. I don't know about this one, it should work the way you've set it, sorry. Someone else will know.

2. Go to Preferences, and double click on your user name and account. Then click Personal. You can set it there.

3. Go to your preferences, and click on Advanced. From there, choose your Message History, and uncheck the "show up to *blank* lines" box.

The buddy icon thing is a bit of a bug. Your new icon won't show up for a while after setting it. The other people are seeing it, but in your buddy list it doesn't show up right for whatever reason.

I tried adium several times, never liked it, and then finally decided to get it, and allocate an hour or two to finding exactly what themes I wanted for everything, and customizing absolutely everything about it just how I wanted it...and so I did. Haven't looked back since. :)

Someone please help me with #1, that one has been bothering me the most.

OutThere, how long does it take for the new buddy icon to show on my buddylist?

My only complaint is with the file transfering. I wish it were less buggy/actually worked. But their website does say it's a work in progress, so once that gets fixed Adium will be good for me.

In the new adium beta file transfer works great....

is there a way to keep the duck in the top menu bar even when the Adium application isn't open? kind of like how the iChat button stays in the menu bar when iChat isn't open.

someone please please please help me with #1

Go to your adium preferences, click the messages tab, and make sure that "show received message fonts" is checked.

Next time do a little preference searching. All three of your problems can be solved via preferences.

I tried to do those things you mentioned in preferences but all the fonts still remain the same.

I've seen it take 10 minutes to an hour before. Really random.

Maybe they'll fix it some time. All that really matters though is that other people see the right icon.

Is it possible that the theme/skin you're using for Adium is forcing it to use a particular font?

if I'm adding to the pot here, my biggest complaint is still the lack of iSight support.

I thought the slowness was a result of them using libgaim... Is it still an issue with msn (it seem to be the worst).

I don't think so, as you should be able to just change it in the preferences, and themes only change the look, not the settings.

In an IM window, when you are in the box to type, go to the format menu and you can select your colour and fonts, just like in every other Mac OS X application text field in which you can select your fonts/colours. You can also set this in the toolbar - there is a Font item and a Colour item.

It may not seem logical coming from other IM programmes, but it is logical within the context of standards across Mac OS X applications.

#1 - While typing to someone just hit Apple-T

#2 - Open a chat with yourself and say a few words, then the icon will change

#3 - Prefs - Advanced - Message History

will I have to do this everytime I chat with someone? or will it become my default font and come up the way I set it whenever I talk to anyone?

One additional thing about the buddy icon that may have been missed is that adium will replace the buddy name and image with those in the address book. For me I was automatically added to the address book and my account picture applied. I couldn't seem to figure out why my buddy icon was allways the same on my computer but my friends could see the new one. I only discovered it after I deleted myself out of the address book. Try that and see if it helps at all.

one of the best features i like about Adium...why do u wanna disable it? i dunno i don't like to use any Address Book features with Adium. They tend to replace this and that so my recomendation, disable anything to do with the Address Book...

I love it now. I used to not use it. But since I switched from entourage I LOVE it. I used "Adium Book" to get things synchronized and now everything works so nice.
