My top 5 remaining questions...

I'm betting reviews will hit tomorrow since Thursday is Tech day in the NYT. That also gives Apple 2 solid days of crazy press before the devices actually go on sale on Saturday. Could be midnight tonight + 1 second.

Since we'll likely have answers to many many unanswered questions shortly, I wanted to get my last licks in!

Here goes:

1) Email search. Can you search within subfolders or only the current folder? I was heartened in the video to see an option to Continue the Search on the Server. But will that search include folders too? Also, can we please get an option to also search the content of messages instead of just To/From/Subject/All?

2) Printing. Is it built in? If so, how: bluetooth? bonjour/wifi? If not....ummm...I guess we make due with apps. That'd be disappointing. That said, I hardly print anymore unless absolutely necessary, so of all sacrifices this is one I can live with, or use the iMac if need be.

3) The file system. What is it and how does it work? We've seen the coverflow-style document manager in the videos. But is there any way to manage files beyond that? Folders/subfolders? Coverflow works okay for a relatively small number of files. What about 1000s? Folders and subfolders already exist as a concept in Mail, so why not in the document manager?

4) mobileme/iDisk. How closely will these be integrated with iWork.com?

5) News. Will we get any about...iOS4 preview? mobileme revamp? etc?

I'll be waiting on a 3G model so I expect all you wifi-only folks to fill me in!
 
I would like to know if Wifi will cut off when it goes to "sleep". I sure hope not!

At school when I log on to use the internet I have to sign in my credentials, so guess what happens every time my iphone locks and I want to connect to wifi again...

And that is what you would see happen on the iPad. Keep in mind that the announcement said 1 month of stand-by time. That would never happen if it was keeping a wi-fi connection open. Wi-fi is quite a battery eater.

True. But in the real world, who would go a MONTH without charging this thing?

I don't expect the reviews you see tonight/tomorrow will address these.
Mossberg/Pogue are to Apple what Larry King is to hard interviews.

They get preview iPads and time with Steve in return for their positive reviews. As much as we want the real reviews now, I don't think they will come until 1 or 2 days after the iPad is out.

The file system on an iPad is just like the normal Mac file system, but its designed not to be exposed, hence the document manager interface seen in apps like Pages. Who's going to have 1000s of documents on their iPad, really?

Also, its not going to print. You'll need to use a third-party app, or just print from your main machine. Again, why would people want to print from their iPad? I don't get it.

Mmmm I don't know. I don't disagree with you that these guys are generally positively biased, or keep their info at a high/simple consumer level. But I don't think everything on my list is so esoteric that they won't be addressed at all. We'll see soon!

I think that was for the Kindle crowd. I can leave my Kindle sit (with the radio switch off) for a month and it's still usable when I pick it up after the time passed.

E-ink only uses power when it refreshes the screen. So, the Kindle just uses power when the "screensaver" changes pictures when left in standby.

To be competitive in the ereader market Apple has to promise the same thing. They need to convince that same person that the iPad can be set down and left for a month only to come back and continue reading. Just like the Kindle, when the data connection is active it goes through the battery but leaving it in sleep the iPad will be just as usable.

I'm actually planning on having quite a few documents on my iPad as I will be using it to take notes in class every day. As full featured as Pages for iPad seems to be, I expect an easy way to organize all the files I will be creating with it. If not, then that really sucks and I guess I'll have to wait for an update. Either that or copy all the documents to my Mac every day to organize them--which would be a pain. I'd rather do that only around test time to create study guides.

And it will be a highly subjective individual experience

The early reviews will I think be more about the general feel of the iPad, how well it works for mainstream consumers, and thoughts about the future of computing. I don't think we'll see detailed analysis of the file management system from the big name reviewers. But, such analysis will be coming from others once the iPad is out and in use.
 
why printing

If you are browsing online and find a coupon for something. Just print it on my way out. I've only had a few occurrences of stores letting me just show them a coupon on an iPhone.

They are selling Pages, Numbers and Keynote. All of which have been re-tooled specifically for the iPad. Which means they are positioning the device to DO business/work.

Why would people want to print from their iPad? You really don't get it? WOW

A better question would be - why have a word processor on a device that can't print? THAT I wouldn't get.

No I don't. The fact is, most people print **** when they don't need to. But do continue to waste dead trees...

Work on your document on your iPad...from your couch, on the train, on the plane. Upload it to iWork or email it. Print it when you get home (or send it to the intended recipient who can print it if they wish). You really don't get it? WOW.

Wow, you've really convinced me that printing is a must-have feature. What on earth was I thinking? People need their coupons dammit!

What's to get. You want to assume that there's no reason to have the iPad be a stand alone device and that it MUST rely on something else to print. I find that logic poor - both in your suggestion and if it occurs - in Apple's execution.

If you sell a word processing program specifically made for your device - you better design a way to print from it. Where else would you EVER see THAT kind of model?

Breaking news: Apple still want you to buy iMacs and MacBook Pros.
 
I want to register people at an event in the field, and be abale to print them a a receipt from that numbers form. I don't want to have to attach myself to someones laptop - and most places won't have wifi.

I have no problem carting my portable printer and an AE to do it on, but just let me print direct to it.
 
(runs off to research whether I can somehow assign an email address to my network printer, or set up a dummy account on my imac with a rule to automatically print attachments sent to that account...

You know, for those rare occasions.

Hey, for whomever asked - I want to have 1000s of documents on my iPad.
