Currently I am using the 3G, however it has a cracked screen. (still works fine though).

Seems like every summer there is a new phone released. Is it likely that this will be the case again? I will feel like an idiot if I upgrade to 3gs and then 2 months later the newest phone comes out.

If you were in my shoes what would you do?
 
If you can wait 3/4 months, with your current phone, then do so.

If you cannot wait 3/4 months, with your current phone, then get another phone.

Waiting a quarter of a year for a phone seems a bit stupid to me, but some people don't have anything better to get excited about. If I had a broken 3G now, I'd get a 3GS. Don't see the point in spending 3/4 months with a broken phone, just to get a slightly newer model (that will be replaced in another 12 months).

Hmmm..."a quarter of a year" sounds kind of scary. Here's another way to look at it:

3 months is 1/8th of a 2-year AT&T contract. I'd rather suffer through 1/8th of my contract with a busted phone just to ensure that I have a decent phone in 2012. Your plan would have him entering 2012 with a cell phone from 2009. I'm gonna bet you'll start running into apps that don't run on your older 3GS phone at that point. The only thing he gains from that is a fixed screen for the next 10 weeks.

Not worth it. I'd give up the next 10 weeks of having a perfect phone in exchange for having something halfway usable in 2012.

I suppose.

But there's no way in hell I'd sign up to a 24 month contract. That's madness!!! I won't even sign up to a 12 month contract. I have a 30 rolling contract. Why tie yourself in for two whole years??? I've had 15 phones in the past 24 months.
 
I became eligible last month but I am waiting. My 3G has a faulty silence switch and it is really annoying. When set to silence, the switch is sensitive and the phone will start vibrating at the slightest bump. I took it to the Apple store and the girl told me it would be $200 to replace for another 3G and that I may as well just upgrade to a new phone. I am gonna hang in there to see what comes out this summer. I am really hoping for a 64GB model more than anything else, but I'll settle with a 32GB.

Ah...you non-Americans are so cute! What with your options and all that. I bet you don't pay for incoming text messages either, do you?

I've had the same problem for several months but never tried bringing it in. Water under the bridge now, though, since I dropped my phone a week ago and the Wi-Fi doesn't work well anymore. Warranty doesn't cover drops.

Yes, but how much do you pay for each of these phones? I could switch phones every month as well if I wanted to pay full price for them.

At this point I'd wait to see what happens in June. We may know more after Thursday...
 
Going off topic for a second, but you pay for received texts in the US?? That's ridiculous, how can they make you pay for something beyond your control?? If someone decides to bombard you with 1000 texts, it costs you? sux2bu!!!!! :eek: Sounds as though you are totally ripped off over there. I pay £20 ($30) a month for unlimited texts, internet, and 600 mins, and I'm not tied in to a contract.

You want a break down of costs? Are you joking?

As the OP is in the US, and will have to be tied in for 2 years, then YES wait for the new phone.

For an iPhone that would cost you roughly $110 a month on AT&T. (Before taxes)
And yes, you have to sign up for 24 months.

No, I'm not joking.

Tell me how being under a 2 year contract makes anything more expensive? If you want out of your contract, you can always pay the $200 to get out and switch to another carrier, which is still less than buying the phone outright from the beginning. If you want to upgrade to a new phone in the middle of the contract, you can pay full price for it, just as you would if you were not in a contract in the first place.


Edit: Yes, I agree our cell phone rates are outrageous in the US compared to other places, but it doesn't really have anything to do with being under contract or not. The point I am making is that signing a 2 year contract for the iPhone doesn't cost any more money then buying the phone outright and paying the same per month without a contract.

old broken screen iPhone - buy replacement part -> repair -> unlock -> sell

upgraded iPhone 3GS - unlock -> sell

$$$$$ from sales -> buy brand new iPhone in June!

Now let's talk other business...


Circuit City is selling factory unlocked iPhones for 800~1000 USD!!!
 
this is a no-brainer... Just hang in there! :) As long as ur phone still works, dont mind the crack (pay 70 bucks if u realllly want it fixed). new iphone update I have a feeling is gonna be a significant update (mainly because of a resolution upgrade) (obviously its not a for-sure spec, but i think Apple would fell behind on the market to android os if they stuck to the current screens; it would be a very bad move, or not move i should say)

Ah, I feel there are huge differences between the UK and US in respect to getting out of contracts.

An iPhone 3GS costs £440 ($668) without a contract here. If I took one out on a 24 month contract, at the lowest tariff which is £35 ($53), I would buy the phone for £89 ($135) and then owe 24 x £35, which is £840 ($1,275) and there is no getting round that. So if I took it out on contract, I HAVE to pay £929 before I can get out of the contract and have the phone as my own.

Or, buy it on payg for £440, and pay £10 a month credit with free internet and texts, and just pay for calls out of the credit. Which would cost me £680 ($1,030) over 24 months, saving £249, of course, I wouldn't keep the phone for that long though.

LOL.....I am in your shoes.....and they are a bit tighter.....I have a 3G......Replaced a shattered screen. Sleep Wake button doesn't work, and the home button you have to give a good hard press to get it to function. But not too hard when in lock mode, becasue that will cause the phone to reboot since I'm jailbroken and have an app where I can re-assign settings like a long hold of the home button. And the ear speaker doesn't work for phone calls. I have to put it on speaker mode, use earphones, or use BT. There's always a workaround.

Anyways....I'm seriously just biding my time until the new iPhone is released. I can upgrade now, but am totally waiting for the HD (or whatever it's called). I do have an old HTC fully charged and ready to go as a backup if this one decides to give up the ghost or freeze up (like it's done to me before and i have to wait for the battery to totally drain). The HTC is a nice phone, but it can't do half of what the iPhone does.

Love my iPhone, but I'm really in need of an upgrade........Just have to be patient and hope the new one is available in June like the others. My hope is that they announce the new phones tomorrow at the 4.0 OS event. A boy can sure dream right??
