My very first iMac will arrive soon and I don't like the Apple store in Nz :(

Hi all and Kiaora from New Zealand

After doing a ton of research on Pc V.S Mac. I have decided to buy an iMac 24" 2.8ghz with 1 gb ram and 320 Gb harddisk.

I also did a research on where should I get my mac. People say I should get it from a physical Apple store not online, because if something goes wrong in the first 7 days then you can ask for a new one or refund, so I made my order at Victoria Campus because I can get a student deal as well

However, if I didn't ask the sales about student deal, I won't get a free ipod nano. And to be honest the service there is horrible. She just wanted me to pay money !!!

So I am kinda regret that I made my purchase there but they are the only Apple shop that offer a student deal (not counting online store).

So should I be concerned with my purchase? Anyway I don't care because I hope my imac doesn't have the Gradient issue or whatever issues that people usually have.

So finger cross and want to say hi to all the Mac User as I am a newbie here.

The advantage of buying it at the Apple Store, and one I think that outweighs any issues with the people there is this ....

You can have them unpack the new iMac, fire it up and show you that it works.

This will allow you to check for operational problems, and screen issues such as bad pixels.


Gradient issue? The 24" is a large LCD and may well have some variation across it's surface. You need to look at it from your usage standpoint and determine how it *might* affect you.

Prior to getting my 24" iMac I was using a Gateway 22" ( or was it 23" ) LCD display on my old G5 Powermac. To me, this iMac is a major improvement because I could actually see a gradient issue on the Gateway LCD that I do not see with the iMac.

Just use it and enjoy it. I cannot believe how much I like mine!!!!

The smile on my face from having the new iMac may require surgery to remove!!!

I have checked this forum and I have noticed there are alot of people get the imacs with Gradient issue.

But seriously is it that bad ?

Since my one is CTO it will take them 10 days and if something goes wrong then I have to wait for another 10 days

ok first of all, if you can, buy online... I think its better...
second of all, 1gb memory ram is (with all due respect) really bad... I would recommend you to buy 2gb +... Why? because than you will have 100% insurance that all the programs you can possibly imagine without the computer getting stuck...

As far as I know, there are no official Apple stores in New Zealand or Australia (yet). I'm assuming you're buying from an Apple RESELLER who could very well have a different returns policy.

Also remember that Americans have perhaps the most customer friendly consumer laws about. Something we don't see in the Antipodes.

I'd strongly recommend getting Apple Care which will help you out here.

The reason why I didn't get the top iMac model from mac because of the PRICE !!!

I am planing to get a ram myself as well as a harddisk, that way I will save some money

Buying a ram from Apple is just too expensive for me...

Actually I should have bought from Apple store and now I am regret

P.S. They don't even have an iPod nano on site at the moment !!!

You are correct. There are no apple stores in NZ yet. Just shops that happen to stock Apple products (and are authorised to do so)

As for the RAM / performance thing. I'd always tell people that I think they'll probably get a better 'overall' experience by having the extra memory over the higher CPU speed.

Other comments about Apple stores and what they actually do really apply to overseas and not so much to NZ. There are a number of exceptions which include Magnum Mac which is (IIRC) owned by Rennaissance Software who are the Apple appointed master distributor for New Zealand.

FWIW, I purchased mine from a hamilton online retailer. I live in Auckland, but I was impatient and they promissed to deliver it to my door the following Saturday morning...which they did and I've been a very happy camper since!

Nice that you are in Hamilton. In Wellington the only shop that do a student deals is on a campus and I have no choice
