My views about October

First of all I want to say hi to all of you
I'm a frequent reader os this forums for quite a while and found a lot of help regarding my 'switch' from PC to Mac.

Just wanted to present you a different point of view on the upcoming months as I think not everybody realizes this (or believes this time it will be different )

Basically I bought a Macbook last week even tho I am perfectly aware that new OS is coming out and that the Macbook might get a redesign.

I'm a music producer and lived in a world of PC for a long time always thinking to jump the fence. I got that kick after I've read that Leopard is coming out soon. I can not imagine loading a new system just to realize that around 50% of crucial plug-ins are not supported (which is the case with every major software update).
I simply can not wait several months to get something to work right (i am not a fan of throwing $$ away so paying extra $$ for a new OS isn't something I want to do).
Even if they pull a new macbook tomorrow I will still be extremely happy with my purchase. I use it as a backup for my protools system and with 2gigs (that is the only downside of the Macbook in my opinion) of ram this little fellow simply flies.

So if there is anybody that is highly dependant on software I suggest to take a good thought before deciding now or later. It might take a big 'later' to get it to work the way it's expected to work from the start.
For me a bit slower system but 100% reliable is worth 100 times more than a faster but unstable machine.

I ordered my 2.4ghz MBP the day they were released. The way I saw it, I could buy leopard after it came out. That way I'd have an older, more stable OS to fall back on if I needed it (I may not even buy leopard for a long while).

Congrats on the switch. It feels great, doesn't it? I made the switch back in June and have loved every day of it since!

I just made the switch this year as well and now I am thinking about buying one for my husband so he can play around with his music. But having never gone through a new OS with apple, realistically what kind of problems will arise? The reason that I am asking is I was thinking about waiting until Leopard comes out before buying one for my husband. But if it doesn't work well for him he will get frustrated and he won't stick with it. Sounds like you think it may be better to buy now instead of waiting for leopard.

New/upgraded OS's will always have some issues. Just look at Vista. I would think that it would take Apple perhaps 6+ months to iron out most of the chaffe before we get an OS that's stable enough to confidently use.

Granted, Leopard does look sexy and the added functionalities are great. But I will wait a bit before upgrading. I switched this July and I'm just getting to know OSX and so far, I am quite happy with Tiger.

Yes, Vista was the final straw for me. The good thing about Vista is that it was the final catalyst for me switching so I guess I should be grateful.

Apple is not the only problem that arises with new systems.
Software developers usually wait till system is stable enough and then launch their products.
So you need to wait 6+ months for the OS itself to grow off the infant age and then for the software developers to tweak their products.

That's about 8-12months and that time without proper tools in my business would lead me to starvation.

Tiger is awesome for music as most of the major software/hardware delvelopers already established the 'link' and trust me... It's HEAVEN compared to PC.

I know for sure I'm not going back.

Depends what software he uses.
I would refer to the specific software websites and browse for detailed compatibility notes with different platforms.
The best and biggest music production tools usually work on both platforms without any issues.

But if your husband is into music I can blindly say he'll fall in love! (consider this I tell you as he'll put a lot of attention to the mac once he gets it )

Buy a Mac when the release date for Leopard is announced. The Mac will ship with Tiger and you will get a coupon (most likely) for a super discounted Leopard. I can't remember how much it was for Tiger but very little.

If I recall correctly the coupon will allow you to purchase Leopard for about 20
or less, this will give you the best of both worlds, the current stable OS and a discount on the new one.
