Myst Series: Cube, Bootcamp, painless?

I would like to play Myst, Riven, and Exile. The last I played Riven was in 1998 on my Performa. Now, they have a DVD set out that gets mixed reviews.

I've Googled, searched, looked, etc. and found no definitive answers. This thread will be my final attempt before giving up and calling it a loss.

Several questions:

1. I have a Cube. Can I downgrade the OS to 10.2 (with Classic support enabled) and run these three games?

2. I have an iMac 2.16 C2D. If I install Windows XP via bootcamp (in 10.5), will I be able to run these games?

3. Irritatingly, if none of the above options work, can I run these on my G4 iMac 1.0 lamp in 10.4 with Classic support enabled?

These are the ONLY computer games I have ever felt nostalgic enough to want to mess around with replaying, but I have some time on my hands coming up and I thought I would try it.

Anyone with insight/actual experience, your help is VERY, VERY much appreciated.

If you have a Cube, you should have no trouble going back as far as System 9. That's what came on mine, and so I assume that's what came on yours. So, your first option is fine, although I don't know much about the series. I assume the Cube can run these games fine in terms of power? I have Myst, and was running it via Virtual PC, which was horrible... (understandably) It should be fine if you get a native Mac version.

Your second option is the most guaranteed to work. Assuming you can get Myst to run on XP (I'll have to try it on my MBP!) you will have no problems.

PS. Why would you prefer to run things on the extremely slow and crappy Cube when you could run them on a slightly less slow and crappy 1 GHz G4 iMac???

The cube has more than enough power to run Riven and Myst. Riven came out right around the same time as the G3 processor. I first played it on a 604e and it was plenty fast.

Exile is OSX compatible, so you should be able to run it on any Mac. It's old enough that a Rosetta translation on an Intel Mac shouldn't matter.

You don't need to downgrade to 10.2 for any reason, 10.4.11 runs Classic just fine on a PPC. Your computers should be more than powerful enough to run Exile (and obviously, Riven and Myst will run on just about anything).

I think there's a version of Myst (and Riven?) that's enhanced from the original (I don't mean Real Myst), maybe that's what comes on the DVD you were talking about. As I recall it was only for Windows too? *shrug*

My trepidation with this subject arises from the fact that no one seemed to have a consensus anywhere, which is what motivated me to try here (a community of Mac users who has, in the past, been enormously helpful).

I suggested the cube first because it is a machine I am not presently doing anything with, and thought I could dedicate it to this purpose. Downgrading to 10.2 was something I got off another site, glad I don't have to... The Lamp is also mostly unused, I suppose that might be a better choice.

As for Bootcamp, this is something I had hoped to avoid, as I have not yet upgraded to Leopard despite having the disc, mostly because I am afraid that there will be problems; I want all my programs to work as they presently do, which is flawlessly.

Since I have 10.4.11 on my iMac 2.16 C2D, is it possible to do anything with Classic support there (and run the programs through OSX without having to resort to Bootcamp?), or do I have to install Windows and get over it?

Unfortunately, there is no classic support whatsoever on Intel macs. Your Cube or Lampshade would, however, work quite well for the purpose.

As far as Leopard and Boot Camp go, I would say you probably have no need to worry about issues with Leopard at this point. Obviously, it's impossible to tell without knowing all of the apps you use, but mostly all the hiccoughs that turned up have been taken care of at this point. I can't imagine going back to Tiger at this point, given how slick Leopard is.

You're thinking of Myst Masterpiece Edition, which basically updates the graphics to be on par with Riven (24bit color, larger movies, etc.). It's what was included with the Myst 10th anniversary bundle, which I'm 99% sure is what the OP has.
