I just boot back into OS X after working in windows only to find ALL my preferences reset. iTunes says my library is damaged. Dock is back to factory default
same for Finder. All my custom icons are gone!. Basically i have a fresh factory copy of OS X!. How did this happen?

Any ideas what the heck is going on. took me weeks to customize OS X and now i have to start again?

Hey, sorry to hear this happend to you. I'm not really sure how to help you with this since i've never come across it. Things like this, however, are the risk of using Beta software, things usually mess up.

In the future it would be advisable to back up your HD often, especially before playing with software such as bootcamp.

Hopefully someone who can help you will come along soon.

Well, thank God i have backups so i manage to restore most of all my stuff. But my icons still need fixing. Strange though i've been using Bootcamp with no issues. However it may be FileVault thats at fault, ever since i've been using it, my mac gets the heeby jeebies.

It happened to me very recently too, I am also using Filevault so my guess is that's the cause. Lost my keychain, prefs, everything. Docs are intact though.

The only thing that I did wrong was hard turning it off after it refuses to wake up.

Which part do you disagree with? It's dodgy. Apple wanted to list it as a cool new feature in Panther and released it before it was ready. People have problems with it left, right, and centre. If you really need something kept safe, then keep those files in a special encrypted disk image. You can make them in Disk Utility and they can't affect the rest of your system so you don't get random data loss/inaccess. Of course, none of this relates to renaming the Home folder or using a dodgy theme changing app. :p

Don't you see it as a problem that filevault was a feature released 3 years ago and even now it is still buggy?

Yeah, it's not cool, but you don't have to use it. Operating systems are full of these unfinished features. It's just that most of them aren't a leedle beet dangerous, like File Vault. :(

File Vault is dodgy at best. Keep it off. Just out of interest, did you rename your Home folder?

Nope i didnt touch the Home Folder. I have disabled FileVault and made an excrypted folder instead. Have also restored most of my icons, so everything seems to be back to normal.

I hope Apple pays more attention to Safari and Filevault in their next update.

This happened to me a few weeks ago, albeit I did a hard shut-off after Finder bit the big one
