Naked iPhone? Consider yourself warned. Just dropped mine!!

Welp, I've done it. Dropped the iPhone after just 9 short days. It's amazing, I've had almost every smartphone/Blackberry out there, never used cases, and NEVER dropped a single one. I have the iPhone for just over a week and drop it. It's just too slick.

I was VERY fortunate, however. As you can see from the pics, it resulted in a tiny crack in the corner of the screen. I dropped it from about 1 ft on concrete. Stress test my ass.

Anyhow, I'm pissed but really lucky I suppose.

Off to search for the best case out there. I love a naked phone, but the stakes are just too high for this slippery fragile device. If you are a "naked" kind of person, consider yourself warned. You will eventually drop it, I'm proof of that as I BABY this thing. Accidents do happen.

BTW, it didn't affect anything functionally. Just a cosmetic blemish (there goes my eBay resale value ).

...hmm, quick question. I am under the 14 days...could I return it to ATT (purchased it there) and say I didn't like it, then re-buy one? It may be worth the $60 to me to do that...

Just own up to the fact that you botched it and dropped it. You're responsible for protecting that thing and it was your mistake for not buying a case protector.

Wow...I wouldn't expect that kind of damage from a 1 ft drop. To me it is so sleekly designed that it's a bit slippery in hand. Opted for the incase sleeve and it gives me that grip. I'd try and take it back if I were you. Wouldn't hurt to try.

You must be REALLY unlucky though, a 1 ft drop is nothing, it must have hit just the right spot. Were you sitting on a curb and dropped it?

I droped mine last week, put a pen hole size dent in the back, scratched part of the plastic piece. I returned it to ATT, got out of the restocking fee. Went over to the apple store, and rebought one and got a case.

eh the first scratch hurts the most, you'll get over it. The damage looks minor, my iPod has many dings that size and I don't care.

When I get mine I will not be taking it outside without an invisibleSHEILD and a Incase Leather Fitted Sleeve for iPhone, I would cry if my iPhone cracked! Then demand apple give me a new one! Even though it was my fault.

Are they all Japanese and sitting at the dinner table in a house with a concrete floor?

Again, my apologies to the original poster as that really does suck, I just question so many of these circumstances and wonder if they aren't a bit polished.

Hope you can find a way to fix it man, I don't know if I could live with my screen being cracked... I read somewhere that its around $265.00 to have the screen replaced.

I'm not sure where people got the feeling it was sold as "ruggedized". From the tests most of us have seen, it seems to be very tough indeed - surprisingly so. Even with some cosmetic damage, it continued to function. This is good, as cell phones do get their share of abuse. But, there isn't anything in the sales material that says it's "drop-proof". There's equipment out there manufactured to Mil Spec, for instance, but they are plainly advertised and sold as such (I own a handheld, Amateur Radio transceiver, that meets those specs). I don't think any of those specs address cosmetic damage.

I've dropped my RAZR a few times, and [unfortunately ] it continued to work. I was careless, and felt I lucked out. Even though they almost give them away, replacing it without an upgrade isn't cheap (I think it's still over $250). Even though the RAZR has its problems (well, it's a POS), I would still feel bad if it was damaged or scratched.

I'm waiting for the first complaint of one that broke while in a case. That should be a hoot. (not to be cruel to that person - I'd feel bad for them having damaged their iPhone)

i have to agree. who drops their phone from a foot above concrete? i dropped my iphone from five feet above concrete, and the phone works fine, and the screen took no damage at all. the back is slightly scratched, but it isn't something i'm going to return.

to the op, i'm really sorry about the crack, but it doesn't look like it will affect the operation of the phone. good luck with whatever you decide to do.

To those who are calling me an ass, etc, about asking if I can return it. I wasn't planning on doing it, just asking if it was possible. If you read forums/news on the iPhone, you will read about the Apple store actually swapping out iPhones with broken screens. I know I read a story or two about that happening, thus prompting me to just simply ask on a message board. I would be ok with you calling me an ass if I was in the store yelling at the manager b/c they said they won't replace it. I will never do that, so I asked a theorethical question.

And to those who are doubting the 1ft fall distance. It was 1ft. My GF's back screened porch has a concrete floor. I was listening to music on my iPhone when I reached in my back pocket (where it was) to change songs. As I was bringing it up, the iPhone fell and the headphone plug snapped out. *bam* it tumbled onto the concrete floor. That's what happened, as outrageous and unbelievable as it sounds.

It's really no big deal, I'm not mad at anyone or expect anything from it. I was stupid for not buying a case b/c I hate cases. Now this happened, I'm buying one and suggesting anyone else reading this who likes a "naked" iPhone to strongly consider getting one. It seems there are MANY folks out there who hate cases, and to them, I now wish them luck (I'm a former member of that "naked with a screen protector" club).

The stress test videos I've seen online of them being dropped on concrete several times have said that the iPhone continues to function perfectly. I don't recall it ever being said that the iPhone was still in perfect cosmetic condition afterwards though.

The Apple Store has been generally rather liberal about accepting exchanges during this opening 2 week period, so it would never hurt to take it there and see what happens. There is more than one story out there of Apple accepting exchanges on iPhones with a busted screen. That policy won't last for long though, and they'll only do them if your iPhone is still within the 14 day period, so you'd want to go up there soon.

I don't understand, maybe I have bad eyes but I don't see any crack of the screen, just the metallic areas being scuffed...which is expected.

I used to put cases on everything but then I realized I was losing the weight, depth and sexiness of the device and it wasn't worth it because 3-4 months from now it won't matter if yours is in pristine condition and mine is banged up as long as both work perfectly...

At least that's been my experience...the only thing I am putting on is a screen protector.
