Name of Mountain Lion recovery partition

This is more of a curiosity question than an issue or a bug. If I recall correctly, the recovery partition in Lion was called "Recovery HD." The recovery partition in Mountain Lion is named "Recovery- 10.8." For some reason, that formatting ("Recovery- 10.8") just seems very unlike Apple. I'm wondering if the people that did fresh installs also have this name or if it reverts back to "Recovery HD" if you do a fresh install?

Nope, mines Recovery-10.8 after a clean install and rebuilding a new Recovery partition afterwards.

This is very interesting. Did you install from the Mac App Store? Or did you use a USB or DVD image to install? And you are using the GM (i.e. 12A269) build, yes? (If you don't mind me asking.)

I'm using the GM build of 10.8 and my recovery partition is named Recovery HD -- this was an upgrade over Lion (which came pre-installed on my machine).

When I installed the DP versions to a separate partition of the HDD, prior to the release of the GM, the recovery partition was labeled Recovery - 10.8 like you're seeing.

I did notice I also lost networking with windows xp, no clue why, I kind of need it,

I cant see any xp share

So, here's something I've discovered after tinkering around with this for a few minutes. When I look up the names of the partitions using "diskutil list" in Terminal, I get that the name of the recovery partition is, indeed, "Recovery HD." However, when I hold Option/Alt during boot, the name shown there is "Recovery-10.8." I'm not sure what would cause that discrepancy -- but, as I said earlier, just something that would bother my OCD side, but certainly not a show-stopping bug.

It seems it depends on where you look more than how you installed.

If I may ask a related Q, when I installed Lion to an empty partition, the result was NO RECOVERY PARTITION AT ALL. Will that be the case again if I...
a) choose to install OS 10.8 on an empty partition?
b) install OS 10.8 over OS 10.7?

For a result of no recovery partition, is there any after-install, non-destructive method of creating the recovery partition? It would be handy for travel -- no need to pack my DVDs.

Hmmm... Just noticed this on my MBP. Prior to installing ML it said 'Recovery HD' and now it shows 'Recovery-10.8' when starting up.

You can change the label in terminal.app:

1. find out which partition is the recovery hd:

diskutil list

Look for apple_boot and note the drive and partition number, f.ex. disk0s3.
2. mount the drive:

diskutil mount disk0s3

3. open the disk in finder and rename. (Right click on drive - get info)
4. change the volume label:

sudo bless --folder "/Volumes/Recovery HD" -label "Recovery HD"

replace /Volumes/Recovery HD with /Volumes/TheNameYouGaveInFinder and "Recovery HD" with "TheVolumeShouldShowUpWithThisNameInBootManager"
5. enter password
6. reboot and enjoy!
