iPhone Names not showing up in messages and all messages gone?help

so I updated to iOS9 dev thinking it would be as easy as the public went but lost all my messages and none of the names are showing up only the numbers . How do I fix this ? It's driving me insane .

Try disabling and enabling contacts in iCloud?

Did that ? Does it take a while . It's not working I'm stressing

I don't know, but I assume all your contacts are in iCloud so it could help. Try force quitting the messages app too.

yes i have , i reinstalled it a few times. i unchecked and check contacts. They show up in contacts but as soon as i send a message to them they show the phone number.

Ok go settings> mail, contact, calendar> short name.

Turn this off.

Made a difference??
