Names of senders do not display in Messages on my Mac?

On my iOS devices the names that should display for the sender of a message in the Messages program display properly, however they do not display in the messages on my Mac? What is not set correctly?

You need to sync your Contacts between your iOS device and your Mac (e.g., turn on Contacts in iCloud on both)

I just found the option to enable this in Address Book and that seems to have solved it. I have been storing all of my new contacts in Gmail, and have not touched Address Book for years. Should I continue to only enter new entries/modify existing entries in Gmail, or should I also use Address Book?

If the Contacts app is syncing with Google it won't matter where you add, delete or change contacts. It's a matter of preference which interface suits you.
