While I really like some of the upgrades in the iPhone 13 like the substantial increase in battery life and the camera upgrades, it seems like this is really more of an (s) upgrade. Based on past models, this could have been more of a 12s than a 13. I wonder if Apple is going to back away from the (s) updates in the future. Thoughts?

Or does this seem more like a more significant update that I'm imagining?

More people will feel their iPhone 12 is out of date when the new version is 13 compared to it being a 12 and a 12s

They already have backed away from S updates. It's been clear since iPhone 11:

11 > 12 > 13
Hmmmm. Good point! The 11->12 seemed a little more significant than the 12->13 due to the redesign of the body and 5g, but that's subjective, I suppose.

I agree it's more like an s upgrade but it doesn't seem like iPhone 12 cases will fit them. The s upgrades in the past have been mostly compatible with the non-s cases.
