I bought a used nano, pretty sure it's 2nd generation, though possibly first. The usb charger that I use for iphone and ipod classic seems to work; it provides power to the nano. But the nano will not charge (battery dead?) and it does not show in itunes. I've gone through all the trouble-shooting steps suggested at Apple support, including putting it into disk mode, but it still will not show in itunes. Is it just dead or is there something I can do? I paid 50 cents at a garage sale so can't go too far wrong but it would be nice if I could get it to work. Thanks!

Sounds like a battery problem to me. If you post a picture or serial number, we can identify it for you and recommend what you can do
From the photo I can tell you that it's a 2nd Gen.
Im going to guess its a battery problem, but it could be one of many things - dead logic board/water damage etc. the truth is that I can't give you a definite answer as I'm not sure.
You could try buying spair/replacement parts and have a go at repairing it. It's going to be tricky though. It would also cost you a bit so it may be better to just buy a working one off eBay

Okay. Does it make a difference that, when hooked to comuter, it works--controls seem fine and music that's on there now definitely plays. That seems a good sign to me--maybe worth trying battery replacement?
Oh definitely! I thought it wasn't powering up at all even when connected. To me it just sounds like the battery can't hold a charge.
If you've got the skills and equipment, you can replace the battery yourself, with this guide on iFixit.
Otherwise, there are places you can go to have it done professionally. Like iResq, and possibly a local shop depending where you're at. Or if you know someone who does electronics repair.
