You could do what I do, which is to disable shake to shuffle. I consider that one of the least useful features anyway. The most useful feature of the iPod is proximity syncing via wifi (oh, right...that's not a feature yet).
I've owned 6 or 7 iPods, including the one I ordered in October 2001, 15 seconds after the first TV commercial for the iPod ever aired (and it still works; it just has a bad firewire HBA so it can't sync). I took it to work and exclaimed to my buddies "check this out--it holds 5000 songs!". They looked at me like I was crazy to have spent $399 on something the size of a pack of Marlboros that could do that, but eventually every one of them bought an iPod of some sort.
Now I have a 5G iPod nano dedicated to Leo Laporte podcasts and another 3G nano dedicated strictly to The Howard Stern Show (its too hard to switch back and forth on one iPod). If they put out a Touch with wifi sync and get the bugs out of Match, I will buy a 64G strictly for music to replace my shuffles.
But as someone who uses iPods 3-4 hours daily every day (commute, shower, lunch, wake-up alarm, etc.) and have done so for nearly 11 years running, I am still baffled by how unintuitive shuffle is. You can shuffle everything or you can shuffle just a playlist, but I still get screwed when I try to listen to Howard or podcasts on the same iPod as music, which I usually always shuffle (one of the reasons I have separate iPods for each is to keep from accidentally shuffling Howard or podcasts). Knowing exactly when shuffle is off or on is never really all that clear.
