Hello MacRumors, I am new here, yet I have been reading MR for years for Apple news...

anyways, I have this sort of problem and I'm wondering what I can do about it.
I have this iPod nano 1G that I got from Bestbuy in summer 06. Worked great until I foolishly lost it in my bookbag and it sat there for 2 weeks under the strain of books and a tossed-around-bag. And so when I finally found it, the screen was cracked, partially dead, and had lots of lines. Gradually the screen got worse and the iPod deteriorated and now it's only sign of life is that it flickers on and off when i connect it to my computer (and it just flickers on and off, it doesn't 'work' anymore). Furthermore, the battery is virtually dead.

So, with this dead iPod I'm wondering what I can do with it. The warranties both from BestBuy and Apple are gone. But I have heard about this method of going to an Apple Store, buying iPod Nano Applecare and then giving it to them; having done that, they either fix it (which is probably impossible) or replace it. Does this seem like a viable option? Do you think it would work? To me it seems 'strange' for lack of a better word but...
